          1. Gomes
          2. Reese
          3. Balta

(would be Jimoh/Reese/Gomes if Americans knew how to jump)

Gomes has been fantastic at the major champs since she switched to LJ. All of her PB's have come in major finals. From the Euro Indoors of 05 with a 6'70 up until 08 World indoors and a 7m jump. IIRC she PRd in the Euro champ final too and was almost at her very best in Osaka. Beijing was so completely unfortunate, I hope. She deserves a global outdoor title IMHO.

Aside from the medal wars (I've got Brittany Reese getting bronze), the a story line (for the U.S. press @ least) will be Briana Glenn and Funmi Jimoh joining Reese in the final.

Reese just auto-qualed on her first Q attempt. Landing in the chair position, of course!

Pretty awful conditions for jumping, even if they are not getting the full effect of the deluge.

                      Jimoh out!

She had two 6'6x jumps but was over the board. Her last was Gomes-esque from Beijing and a 6'3....diasaster

Brianna Glenn had two fouls too, but her last jump got her out to 6'53 and that's actually good enough for 11th overall. Looks like that will be enough.

The first round was dry, Reese who went third had still and dry conditions, went automatic but the second round , the heavens opened, negative winds and no one could deal!

                      Some surprise finalists!

Balta's jump wasn;t even close to the board and into a headwind. Watch her in the final.

Gomes, Reese, Balta, Lebedeva (although she's clearly in pain) and to a lesser extent Maggi look to be the challengers.

                      Simiagina, Jimoh, Sokolova, all out!

                      Thrilled for Glenn!

Bianca Kappler also out, she just can't catch a break.

Anyway, very unfortunate situation for a lot of women.
