Oslo/Bislett

I'm going to the Bislett Games this year; it will be my first big track vacation. I already have lodging (a friend just moved to Oslo, hence the trip), but any other recommendations (good bars, sightseeing, etc.) are welcomed.

As for bars, hold onto your wallet! Norway probably has the world's highest prices for alcohol. $6-7 beers are the norm.

Not sure if you're an art fan, but the National Museum (right in the center of the city) is fantastic. So is the Edvard Munch Museum a short subway ride away.

Holmenkollen (sp?), the big ski jump stadium, is a cool visit for sports fans, even in the summer.

If you're a runner, take the subway to the end of town (by the Norwegian College of P.E.) and run on the many soft, forest paths.

I'm a vegetarian, so I'm afraid I can't offer any good advice on seafood restaurants!

Depending on how much time you have, a ferry ride along the coast is a must.

any time you go to any of the Golden League meets in Europe one of the best sites is the athlete hotel on meet day. Just sitting in the lobby for a few hours can be a great experience, becuase in general even many of the superstars will wander through and some will actually be conducive to a few minutes of conversation if you aren't a pest.

ps--not sure where Dan found the 6- or 7-buck beers in Oslo; he must've been drinking the equivalent of Mickey's Big Mouth. :-)

GH, ya kidding? Mickey's Big Mouth is a malt liquor and would be taxed at the highest rate if they sold it in Norway. Dan probably found his deal on some of their "light," which is VERY low alcohol.

Lee should also check out the Viking Ship museum. And Vigeland Parken, a park full of statues by Norwegian sculptor Gustav (?) Vigeland, is worth seeing, especially if the weather's nice.

Uh-oh! Alert for board moderators. Note that the last poster perhaps thinks the original post was about the 2004 Bislett when in reality it was about 2003, and there's no way to tell from the dating. Can/should you add the year to the dates of posts?

My understanding is that they have moved the meet to Fana Stadium in the Bergen suburbs this year.
Bergen is 30 min by air from Oslo. Beautiful place but it rains a lot, even in summer.

If you are going to be based in Oslo (as opposed to Bergen) you might consider the train. It might work out for a better price/time tradeoff. Check before you reserve.

I think the problem with high alcohol costs in Norway is probably the same as in Sweden, where the govt tries to actively discourage consumption by high taxation. And, in Sweden, the tax is based upon alcohol content. I was amazed at the prices in Stockholm & Visby in '83. The Swedes make liquor runs to the Aaland Islands to beat the price crunch. I never have been to Oslo, so will never see the original stadium, but if it is at all like that in Stockholm, it was probably a hoot.
