  • England v Australia - the athletics "Ashes"

This new street event to be combined with the Great North Run will be held in a few weeks (Sept 19) at Tyneside.

When initially announced last year - http://www2.greatrun.org/News/NormalNews.aspx?nid=62 -, events were supposed to include

    Straight 200m
    Sprint Hurdles (presumably 110H/100H)
    Street Mile
    Street 3000m
    Shot
    HJ
    PV

Anybody got any clues what the official programme will consist of??

I can see another Ashes drubbing for the Aussies as in many of these events we wouldn't have a snowball's chance of being competitive (especially given injury probs of Sally and Steve at the moment).

The event, which will be staged on a specially constructed four-lane straight 200m track on Newcastle’s stunning Quayside, has already got the two nation’s athletes buzzing.
That is badass but I think I speak for everyone when I say this meet badly needs a 4x4.

You could presumably run such a race over the same course used for the Street Mile...

And probably a mixed one to keep it suitably 'different' - for GBR Rooney, Bingham, Sanders and probably TBO (though maybe not - it is a relay, after all  ). For Oz - Wroe, Steffensen, Jana and Tamsyn (if only for the inevitable bitchfight!)

Or how about a mile medley?

          W800, M400, W200, M200??

Even two relays would be good!

            i think hayden/langer wouda got to 200

hayden/ponting couda taken it to 350

coupla quick wickets, but ponting/gilchrist wouda steadied the ship for 550/4 with ricky 201*

maybe just about on a par with windies '84 line-up who were set 350 to win at 11:35 am on 5th day at lords & did it for loss of 1 wicket by 5:30 pm !!!

The English Team looks substantially stronger...

              Set up is interesting: http://www.greatcitygames.org/maps/GNCMap.jpg

It all happens this coming Friday & Saturday...

Yes, looks great, but the crucial question is, lacking stumps as we do, what on earth are we going to burn to put into a tiny trophy? And do we see a repeat on the streets of Sydney?

Aussie team is crap. Couldn't some of the better ones stay in Europe after the WAF?

I guess the only event where they stand a chance is the women's 2-miles.

I think the Aussie tactics in this event should be for Elouise Wellings (how many years since she actually raced?) to trip up both Poms in the first 10m and then Benita can have a nice easy jog.

I think Wellings's last race might have been during the Great North Run weekend in 2006 when she ran the 3km on the roads.

Willis should be the favourite but maybe 2-miles is a bit too short for her these days?

It's been a month since the WC, with few events for middling athletes to compete in, and only four Aussies were in the WAF. One (Wroe, in terrible form) has hung around for Newcastle. Two (samuels and Mickle) don't have events to compete in. That only leaves Lapierre and he has indicated that he's done after a long Euro season.

As for your predictions, I'll put my money on Scott Martin also winning (not sure on PRs of the UK throwers but they seem off the bottom of the IAAF lists - and the UK rankings seem inpenetrable).

And Collis Birmingham may give Farah and Baddeley a run for their money
