  • Placing Tables (2009, 2008, 2007...)

Someone raised the issue of placing tables (i.e. 1st-8th scored) that appear on IAAF pages.

Thought I'd have a quick glance at last 3 global champs (Berlin, Beijing, Osaka) and see how countries compared from meet to meet.

    Here are the top 10s:

    Osaka
    1 USA 249
    2 RUS 191
    3 KEN 123
    4 JAM 98
    5 GER 84
    6 GBR 61
    7 CHN 51
    8 ETH 44
    =9 CUB 43
    =9 POL 43

    Beijing
    1 USA 207
    2 RUS 200
    3 KEN 135
    4 JAM 121
    5 ETH 76
    6 GBR 71
    7 BLR 65
    8 CUB 61
    9 UKR 50
    10 GER 44

    Berlin
    1 USA 231
    2 RUS 154
    3 JAM 136
    4 KEN 120
    5 GER 104
    6 ETH 88
    7 GBR 81
    8 POL 73
    9 CUB 51
    10 CHN 50

So, looking at that big losers over three years have been Russians... Big winners Jamaica... others tend to oscillate

In case you wondering, of countries only in Top 10 once or twice, here's their ranking and score in other years:

    2007:
    11 Belarus 39
    =15 Ukraine 30

    2008:
    13 China 39
    11 Poland 43

    2009:
    28 Belarus 11
    =14 Ukraine 29

There is a lot more data in there for anyone interested.

There doesn't seem to a table for 2005...

Here's a bit more data mining.

Looking at the scores for the same past 3 meets, I calculated an average per country across Osaka & Beijing. Then looking at those nations scoring 9 or more points (i.e. they have at least two placers), here's the percentage difference between their Berlin score compared to said average:

      IRELAND (IRL) 66.7%
      GERMANY (GER) 40.5%
      JAPAN (JPN) 38.5%
      PORTUGAL (POR) 35.7%
      TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO (TRI) 28.0%
      SOUTH AFRICA (RSA) 27.8%
      POLAND (POL) 25.9%
      CROATIA (CRO) 17.6%
      BAHRAIN (BRN) 12.8%
      PR OF CHINA (CHN) 12.4%
      BAHAMAS (BAH) 10.2%
      ETHIOPIA (ETH) 7.3%
      GREAT BRITAIN & N.I. (GBR) 6.6%
      FRANCE (FRA) 6.5%
      AUSTRALIA (AUS) 5.9%
      JAMAICA (JAM) 5.8%
      UNITED STATES (USA) 5.5%
      ITALY (ITA) 4.8%

      SPAIN (ESP) -3.3%
      NORWAY (NOR) -5.6%
      KENYA (KEN) -5.9%
      CUBA (CUB) -8.9%
      ROMANIA (ROU) -9.7%
      SLOVENIA (SLO) -10.0%
      RUSSIA (RUS) -13.0%
      NEW ZEALAND (NZL) -21.7%
      BRAZIL (BRA) -23.5%
      CZECH REPUBLIC (CZE) -24.3%
      UKRAINE (UKR) -26.6%
      MOROCCO (MAR) -28.0%
      CANADA (CAN) -31.4%
      BELARUS (BLR) -71.1%

That is a very nice piece of work - thanks for doing that, and don't forget to send a copy to Athletics Canada...
