  • W 100: Jeter deserves No.1 Ranking/ Men's confusing 4-10

    C. Jeter deserves the No. 1 ranking at women's 100.

    by a mile.

    Men's 100 is no-brainer:

    1. Bolt
    2. Gay
    3. Powell

    after that it gets confusing.

Close between Darvis Patton, Mike Rodgers, Daniel Bailey for 4th.

#1 ranking by Jeter means nothing when Fraser has ALL the titles(Olympic and World Champion)

I don't think Jeter should be ranked number one after finishing third in the World Championships.

In an event with many races run throughout the season (like the 100m), particularly if a sizable chunk of those races include most/all of the top women, it's entirely conceivable to have someone who finished third in the WC's wind up ranked #1 for the year.

Much less likely, I'd say, for something like the 10k.

Jeter had a wonderful year in the 100 meters. She won many races and ran one of the fastest times in history, however the way she was defeated in Berlin, at the most important meet of 2009, I think I would probably rank her number two in the world. I admit it is very close and she did have some great meets after Berlin, but I would put a lot of weight on the world championships.

                totally agree.

yes, fraser has the big one, but how many times did jeter beat her and how many of the best times are jeter's? i think the WC counts more than another run of the mill race, but jeter has accumulated many more victories and fast times than fraser,so she deserves to be #1 for 2009.

In two years, or four, how many will remember who was #1 ranked in 2009, as opposed to how many will remember who was the world champion? Does it come down to much ado about nothing? What really, is the #1 ranking worth? How many times does an announcer mention that a runner was #1 ranked in any year, versus the amount of time they mention that a runner was a world champion?

Jeter had a full, long season with some fast times, the best times the world has seen for a long time, but nothing to show for it but a bronze medal. Not so long ago an athlete in the same scenario had many unflattering labels attached to their name. Bronze medal, won everything after the WC, even had a world record. Still #2. Precedent?

I have one rule of thumb here: The World Championship carries as much weight as 3 or 4 international, Grand Prix or Golden League meets when many of the best in the world participate. If I'm not mistaken, Jeter won her last 4 (or was it 5?) meets, and won 2 others before the World Champs, including that 10.92 into a stiff headwind in the U.K. With those wins, along with 10.67 at the WAF and 10.64 in Shanghai, she pretty much steals the #1 spot from either Shelly or Kerron and runs away with it.

Now, if she didn't make the final in Berlin, it might have been a tighter squeeze for Carmelita.

This is exactly what happened in 1992. Gail Devers won the big one in Barcelona, but Gwen Torrence and Irina Privalova were bouncing her off the walls everywhere else. Irina ended up #1 and Gwen #2 because, although they had similar records against everyone else, Irina won bronze and Gwen was 4th. Gail ended up #3, and Juliet Cuthbert, 2nd in Barcelona, was horrible everywhere else and ranked 5th behind Ottey (if I remember correctly).

I'm almost inclined to give #4 to Doc Patton. Let's see how far that 9.89 in Shanghai gets him. He was last in the Berlin final, wasn't he?

So what happens to Isinbayeva? Wins GP meets, good marks, even one WR, but NO medal at the WC. Is she also out of the #1 spot?

Are you serious? A #1 ranking dramatically improves the earning power of the athlete. It makes a very big difference to the athletes.

Jeter was number 1 for the year. Just not in one race. The looks on the faces of KS and SAF at WAF spoke volumes. But to T&FN and GH the woman's event comes down to 1 race. Times only matter (to them) if you are Usain Bolt, imo.
