  • Radcliffe running NYM (again!)

Radcliffe, who is due to return to action in Birmingham on 11 October, will be seeking her fourth New York Marathon win and third in succession.

Not really surprising but I wish she would choose a different race so she can go for another sub-2:20 clocking, which probably isn't possible in NY.

I can't seem to get that excited about Paula anymore. I'd like her to run somewhere other than NYC or London. Her Olympic/World champs medalling challenging days are over so I'd like her to do one of the faster city marathons again.

Really?! If she'd transferred the form she showed in last year's NYM to either Beijing or Berlin she'd have certainly won a medal (probably gold). Her world class races may prove to be fewer and more far inbetween in the next 3 years but I'm sure she continue to be a major force to be reckoned with. No reason to believe she couldn't run a sub-2:20 on the right course.

Then get the other marathons to offer her more money. I'm sure other teams would have loved to have had Derek Jeter on their lineup, but since the Yankees offered him $189,000,000 over ten years, why would he?

why is she running NY at all i'll bet money she'll be injured in the new year and miss the summer again.

lay off the marathons run a XC season run London marathon if you have to, then have a summer running track and get some spead back.
            i deserve extra credit

She is doing the right thing. In the twilight of her career she might as well make the money while it is available.

shes obviuosly doing it for the money, which fair enough, shes running out of time to earn big bucks!

as a fan tho, even if she runs 2:21 its not going to make me excited or add anything to how i feel for paula cos shes done new york 3 times already. i would rather see her run chicago and see if she could really run 2:17 again, probably not at this stage coming back from injury.

i suspect she will win, not by much, in around 2:25.

money and performance aside tho - if i was in paulas shoes id take any chance to visit new york city, i just got back 3 weeks ago and i cant wait to go back!

Why? Even at her fastest she had no real finishing speed at the end of a track 10k, so she's not gonna win any 10k of import these days and now she's older where her strenght is her strenght and can WIN huge marathons.

Fine, and more power to her.

But how about knocking off the gaming...the maybe I will (run the WC) and maybe I won't stuff. As long as attention is fixed on her the next generation of British distance runners will be an afterthought.

she can't win track races at world level but i believe she can at european and commonwealth which we have next year. i think she needs a year off the stress and pressure of marathon running lay off the spring and winter marathons have some fun next summer. Then come into next year fresh and kill everyone at WC. i still think she an beat anyone in the world at the marathon but for me she has to do at a champs and not in NY at the end of the year, in a slow time which is not really of much consequence

Not so sure she can win either a European or Commonwealth track race. The Kenyans (Masai, Kibet, Cheruiyot) would be competing at the Commonwealths, while people like Abeylegesse and a handful of Russians we've not yet heard of who will magically improve from 16:00/32:30 to 14:45/30:00 in the space of a year could be competing at the Europeans. But I would love to see Radcliffe on the track again, just for old times sake, so it would be great to see her at a British GP or something.

That really doesn't sound like something that would be worth her having to sacfrice 20-30% of her potential income for the year if it conflicted with running a major marathon.
