Of all of the pictures of the men's WC 50K walk available for publishing, T&FN chose one of the eventual winner with neither foot touching the ground on page 19 of the latest issue.

What is the message? Because they had to have noticed it. That's where I look every time a see a race walking picture; I look at their feet and knees. It's like a game.

Maybe I'm being too extreme. Maybe racewalking judges turn a blind eye to the "occasional" lift, but flag the consistent, blatant transgressors.

And if Mr. Kirdyapkin reads T&FN, is he embarrassed by said picture? Or are he and his racewalking buddies having a little chuckle over it?

I saw that and my reaction was . . . seriously . . . most walkers in mid-course, at top speed, DO lift.

"Race Walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground, so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg shall be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the vertical upright position."

If they were really serious about contact, I'm sure there is some kind of transponder they could attatch to heels and toes of shoes.
