  • Kynard gets provisional qualifier

Kynard, fresh off his HS success get's a provisional qualifying mark of 7'2.25" in his first NCAA meet. Another K-State prodigy in the beginning stages of a no doubt great career.

Any particular reason his 7' 4.5" indoor mark from March was left off the US men's list sent out today?

And gets gets it done early in 2011 too.

He is the real deal. There will be some excellent battles with him and Ricky Robertson later on this year.

Kynard has ridiculous jumping ability. It amazes me how far out he takes off from the bar. He's easily over 5' away from the bar at plant. That is some serious strength and development for such a young jumper to have that kind of ability and control. He's a speed-flopper all the way.

That definitely breaks Scott Sellers' K-State indoor record and ties Sellers' outdoor K-State record. Kynard getting better and better. World class, IMO.

                    Re: Kynard gets provisional qualifier

Just called his (and my) HS coach. I said "7-7 3/4" and he said "Oh boy...when God made a high jumper, it was Erik".

His only miss of the night was his first attempt at 2.24. Other than that, all clean. Quit after 2.33. #3 on the 2011 world list, #3 all-time on the collegiate indoor list. Couldn't be happening to a nicer person, either. I told local media last week that we'll see him jump in London and he'll still be in it when it matters, and right now I don't feel like saying that is going out on a limb.

There is an amateur video on youtube of his clearance. It looks like he skied over it cleanly. Look out Hollis Conway!

How can you tell? It's shaky and from far away. The one thing I can see is how fast his approach is and how far out he takes off!

There is a function called full-screen that helps in that regard  . It appears clean from my vantage point.

His takeoff has always been from miles away, even in HS. However, his power enables him to maintain his elevation. He is a very gifted speed-flopper.

Using the rule that if you turn 20 in a calendar year then you're considered 20 for the whole year, here is the all-time list for 20-and-under...
                            2.38 Zhu Jianhua CHN
                            2.38 Patrik Sjöberg SWE
                            2.37 Jacques Freitag RSA
                            2.37 Steve Smith GBR
                            2.37 Javier Sotomayor CUB
                            2.37 Dragutin Topic SRB
                            2.37 Ivan Ukhov RUS
                            2.35 Mark Boswell CAN
                            2.35 Tim Forsyth AUS
                            2.35 Dietmar Mögenburg GER
                            2.35 Volodymyr Yaschenko UKR
                            2.34 Jaroslav Bába CZE
                            2.34 Hollis Conway USA
                            2.34 Germaine Mason JAM
                            2.34 Yuriy Sergiyenko UKR
                            2.33 Eric Kynard USA
                            2.33 Igor Paklin KGZ

Kynard turned 20 years old on Feb. 3. Note that when you get past 2.35 at this age, 3 of the 7 eventually became either world record holders or WC/OG champs (and Ukhov is quite capable of making it 4 out of 7).
