  • Isinbayeva's Mark Now THE World Record

I've heard multiple people talk about Isinbayeva's 4.86 and how that makes her certain to claim the outdoor WR (her own 4.82 at this point) as well, so just thought I'd mention for those who have forgotten that the IAAF no longer recognizes "outdoor world records" it recognizes "world records" and "indoor world records," meaning that if the indoor conditions don't violate the "outdoor" rules that mark becomes the (my word, not theirs) comprehensive WR.

So if all get ratified, Isinbayeva's 4.82 was actually broken three times this year: 4.83 by her at Donets'k, 4.85 by Feofanova in Athens and then the 4.86.

If the 4.83 is ratified (and I know of no reason it shouldn't be), then the IAAF is derelict in its duty if it doesn't go back and retroactively make Bubka's 6.15 from that venue (which is ratified as an indoor WR) the overall WR ahead of his outdoor 6.14. Logic says no other course of action is possible.

ps--note that USATF doesn't follow the same rules, so Dragila's 4.81 is only the indoor AR and doesn't get a share of the THE AR, her outdoor 4.81.

"Logic says no other course of action is possible."

Knowing gh's infamous sarcasm, I assume he realizes that this statement drips in irony. If logic WERE the criterion, then many of the IAAF's decisions would be have to be invalidated.

garry, you might remember we all talked about this about 8 months ago... when I asked if Bubka's indoor 20'2" was from a "outdoor legal" runway... and you stated that it indeed was just that... not tartan on wood or poor wood.

Sorry twice... hit a key twice, plus I mean plain ( not poor) wood.

Will the 5 m barrier be broken soon?

If they were using the much-fantasized "laser-beam" method (i.e., no matter where the bar is, you have a beam of light that tells what you actually cleared), I'm not sure that Isinbayeva didn't do it more than once in Budapest. The in-stadium replays of her from the mini-cam mounted on the standards showed an utterly phenomenal amount of clearance at lower heights.
