I remember Haas placing in either the National AAU or the NCAA in the early 1960s. One year he placed 4th in the 220. The next year he moved up to the half mile and placed 4th there. Other than that I don't know anything else about him. He might have run for Occidental or another college in Southern Cal.
Didn't Jim Ryan run around 10 flat for a 100 yd. dash when he was in high school?

Not quite the same, but Laura Roesler has been the state champion in the 100m as well as the 800 (and everything in between without hurdles) as well as being state XC champ. That is about as much range as I can ever remember seeing. I would think that a 400/800 guy (e.g., Kersh) would be the best bet, and Coe was sort of in that mold, but he was really a 800/1500 guy. Now if Bolt could extend is range further.... (or Wariner...)

Re: What's the fastest 100m time ever run by a sub-4 miler?
Coe had a high 45.x relay split so I'm guessing that 10.7-10.9 wasn't out of the question.
I'm also sure that I've seen a 12.x 100m split given, definitely for an 800m (not too hard to believe when people hit the first 200m in 24.x or 25.x). But I'm sure I saw it for a 1500m. This is over 20 years ago that I read it, so goodness only knows what it was for.

Re: What's the fastest 100m time ever run by a sub-4 miler?
I had a similar question myself months ago and was going to post it myself, but forgot. In high school I had a coach who was of the impression that elite 1500M runners (of Nourreddine Morceli caliber) could run the 100M dash in roughly the 10.7-11.0 range. I had never been able to substantiate his argument and I never cross verified it with the opinions of any collegiate level coaches, but the curiosity revisited me not too long ago.
I tried all the search engines and the best I've been able to muster hitherto was this PDF generated by a grad student at Brigham Young University (http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/ETD/image/etd634.pdf). Granted his research only covers NCAA Division I middle distance runners (not the world class milers we're looking for) and deems them capable of running un-newsworthy times around 11.5 seconds it does provide somewhat of a start.
In all though I too (like you) am curious to see what athletes like Bernard Lagat or Deresse Mekonnen would be capable of in the 100m.

For what it's worth, Kenenisa Bekele said in an interview his 100 metres pb ist 11 flat. So I'd assume that world class milers are capable of running just below 11 seconds.
Then there's David Rudisha who ran 45,50 and 1:42,01. He should be able to run a sub-4 mile and well below 11 seconds.
Also, I just wrote a E-Mail to Thomas Wessinghage (3:49.98 mile) about this topic. I'll let you know when he answers.

If you could line the best milers up for the 100, I believe Ryun would be an also ran. I'd put my money on Snell . . . then maybe Coe.
