      Re: UTech Games

Sorry about no updates while at the Stadium, the blowing rain ensured that I'd keep my blackberry in my pocket.

Michael Frater was in the stands, he tweaked his groin last week and it didn't feel good in warm-up so he did not take part in the meet. He expects to be at Penn and the JII.

Botched relay hand-off cost Bolt his chance to run. Apparently a team mate was standing in the wrong lane for the first change-over. Weird.

Bridgette Foster-Hylton grabbed her hamstring while running in 2nd place in the 100m, tripped when trying to slow down and dove head first then skated for a few feet on the wet track. Major "ouch", she was carted off the field. I hope this will not impact her Diamond League season too badly but I do not know the extent of her injury.

Conditions were terrible. Cold, raining and windy. Nesta Carter won the 100m in 10.24 into a -5.0m/s headwind and looked good doing it. He may be headed for sub-9.90, we will just have to wait and see.

Asafa gave us all a scare, slowing noticeably at about the 120m mark on his 200m race. It looked like he felt something, and he jogged the rest of the race and still won it, with Padgett second. I have a few feelers out and will let folks know what I hear.

One thing is for sure, the MVP athletes were committed to running the event despite the conditions.

        Re: UTech Games

I was surprised Bolt was actually there ready to run because it was reported in the news this week that all the Racers Team members except Bolt would be running at the meet.

Hopefully that "stupid" mistake on the relay is not made next week at Penns.

Hope Asafa and Brigette will be fine. Asafa always seem to get injured when he runs the 200m

Cold in Jamaica ? You must be kidding. lol

          Carters 10.24 with -5.0 wind converts into a 9.87

          Blake was second in 10.28

Track Alerts is reporting cramps for Asafa.

notorious, that's what Carter's 10.24 converted to for me too, hence my comment about him going sub-9.90 this year. It should be interesting to watch him and Blake go at it for #3 Jamaican "title". I think that Michael will be behind them, having missed two months of training due to tendinitis.

Actually, that 10.24 looks like it might be worth even more than a sub 9.90 expectation, if the wind reading was really correct.

Given that 10.24 converts to 9.87, we still didn't even take the other two huge factors into account that make it worth even more impressiveness:

              1. The weather. You said it was cold and raining. So that is yet another negating factor for their race time.

              2. It's very early season. They have only just recently begun training for this season, and this was one of their first races of the season. Chances are, if they don't get injured, they'll be considerably faster runners by mid or late season than in early season, obviously, so:

If that right there was already worth 9.87-basic for Carter and 9.90 for Blake, and let's say if we take the coldness and rain into account, now it's worth more like 9.8 low and 9.8 mid for them, and then we take into account that they've only just barely begun their seasons, and that' they'll be running faster and better by later in the season, they might be 9.7x by the end of the season!

To me this is pretty shocking, considering that I would never have guessed Nesta Carter to be able to go 9.7-basic in his whole career, let alone this season, but, that's what this result points too, if that -5.0 wind reading is correct, and we factor in the cold and the fact that the season only just started. Blake on the other hand, not nearly as much of a surprise for me if he goes 9.7-basic this season, given that he was only 20 years old last season and was already running 9.93 into a slight headwind in rainy weather, I mean, by the end of last season, that guy clearly already had soon-to-be-great-100m-runner already written on his forehead practically, in my opinion, so his great result in this meet doesn't surprise me nearly as much as Carter's does.

Anyway, that's wonderful news, since if those two really do start running 9.7's during the Diamond League events, it'll force Bolt to be running 9.6's and 9.5's left and right throughout the whole Diamon League season, since he'll be up against those guys a whole bunch of times, rather than him only having to run a 9.6 or 9.5 just like one single time in the whole season if he only meets Tyson once during the season or something.

So, overall, I would say these results, as innocuous as they have initially appeared to the quick glance, are actually pretty awesome. I'm happy.

Nothing beats toyracer's report, but here's what the Gleaner had to say....

                http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/2010 ... rts12.html

"World 100m hurdles champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton went crashing to the track in the women's 100m as she lost her footing after apparently picking up an injury midway the race. The event was won by her MVP club mate Sherone Simpson in 11.58 seconds. Racers' Schillonie Calvert, 11.90, was second with MVP's Ayanna Hutchinson third in 12.12. Olympic and World 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker, 52.84, had to settle for second place in the flat one-lap event behind UTech's Stephanie McPherson who won in 52.48. 2008 Beijing Olympic Games finalist Markino Buckley (MVP), 50.49, established a new meet record in the 400m hurdles, erasing the old mark of 50.77 seconds which was set last year by UTech's Ramon Cooper. Cooper, 51.41, had to settle for second place ahead of Richard Farquharson, 53.15, of G.C. Foster College. Ricardo Chambers (Racers) was the fastest in the 400m field, setting a new mark of 45.61 in the event ahead of Oral Thompson (Swept), 46.23, and Denard Coote (MVP), 46.91."
My heart is still in the Caribbean....

Running in the rain was not looking pretty for the sprinters; however, Carrie Russell looked very impressive. She looks like she is ready and rearing to go. Waiting to see her in June.

Watching the Carrie Russell race I'll be shocked if she does not run sub 11, and sub 10.9 isn't out of the question. Remember she was 3rd in the WJC in 2006 and is still only 19. Turns 20 in October one week before Asha Philip who was 4th in that WJC 100

Yeah, Mr. 7sided, Russell in my opinion has a greater upside than Calvert. Beat her in 2006 (but Schillonie was coming off injury) at WJC with absolutely horrible form. She is still overstriding a bit but Franno has definitely corrected some of her flaws (and they are many) already. If Calvert can commit to a proper offseason conditioning program and learns how to run she will go sub 11. I don't think it happens this season though. If Carrie Russell stays uninjured then next year's WC trials W100m will be worth going miles to see. No one will be safe six into four I can't LOL ROFL QWL
