  • UCLA-Oregon Dual 2010 (+ great quote)

    http://www.registerguard.com/csp/cms/si ... record.csp
While I haven't bothered to dope this dual as in past years, because it won't be close (hoping I'm somehow wrong), I did see a hilarious quote in the RG Oregon newspaper by new UCLA coach Maynard:
"...we’d like to give the Ducks a run for their money. For us, one of the key issues is what events will Ashton Eaton compete in? ... I was thinking this would be a good week to rest him.”
I was thinking the same thing.

The interesting news in that story is UCLA star hurdler Kevin Craddock seems to be back on the team (if the RG reporter got his facts correct). The reporter may have just stumbled on a big scoop and not even realized it. That's a 10-point swing and FB team is allowing a couple of high scorers to fly up to Eugene for the meet. Might get interesting for a moment or two, but I still can't see it being very close in the end.

Fly to a dual meet...what is this, 1976?

Oh, right, it isn't 1976. 6,000+ attendance is notable instead of disappointing.

I'll be following this online with great interest, BTW. I think it will be THE most interesting collegiate meet of the year, bar none.

Won't even be the most interesting meet in Eugene this fortnight; that would have been the Duck Men AND Women vs A&M Men AND Women last weekend.

That one wasn't close for either men or women, while this is supposed to be very tight. UCLA is a better small-meet team than TAMU -- the Bruins won their indoor conference meet, the Aggies didn't even get a trophy at theirs.

You're comparing interesting with close. While I've no doubt the meet this weekend will be enjoyable to watch, I still think the more interesting meet was the one which will feature the most performers "going for the Gold" at Hayward in June. This weekend's meet is a dual meet with a team that got shut out last year in Fayetteville. The meet last weekend was a preview of two teams (well, four, in fact) who hope to be slugging it out for team titles in June. That being said, the people up here just love to root against the LA schools, so there might be a bigger and more vocal crowd than last weekend.

Personally, I find the team aspect the only really compelling part of college track. I can see your point, but I hope you can see why I'm interested by the possibility of the #2 team in the country getting beat at home. Most college track meets are kind of like watching Akron St Vincent-St Mary in the state playoffs a few years back: LeBron James was fun to watch, but the actual games themselves weren't particularly compelling.

Mr Craddock has been participating in team practices for at least the past week. He's fired up for this dual meet.

                  Runnerspace form chart...

                  http://www.runnerspace.com/news.php?do= ... ws_id=5452

Has it 81-77 UO- UCLA going into the 4X400..looks pretty close! 8-)

Also Lannana reply regarding Maynard's bemoaning his chances.. to paraphrase.. I'm from New York City, and I know when I'm getting hustled.

I agree with you regarding quality dual meets, they are fun to watch and if this one comes down to the final event, it will make for a very exciting day, especially for me since I'm an SC grad as well as a Duck fan :P

Doesn't look like it is true. My info is that Craddock already has an agent, has "turned pro" and will debut in May. Very odd that the RG paper would have said that after speaking directly with UCLA coach Maynard... then again, as Vin mentions, it could be part of the "hustle."

FWIW, Craddock is shown on the accepted entrants lists, but the Runnerspace dope sheet listed above places a few asterisks next to his name and doesn't include him in the scoring. We'll know more in just a few hours. Here's a post from yesterday from Conway Hill:
"Hard for me to bet against the Ducks this week. Especially since top hurdler Kevin Craddock has left school and is now working with coach Darrel Smith and hurdlers Jason Richardson and Ryan Wilson as training partners".

Craddock has scratched. See story linked on T&FN front page.

                            Final score:
                            Oregon 92
                            UCLA 71

Some of the marks that stood out:
                            Steeple: UCLA's Dylan Knight, 8:48
                            200m: Eaton, 21.03 into a -2.1 wind
                            Jav: UO's Alex Wolff, 73.36m (240-08)
                            Hammer: UO's Jordan Stray, 66.28m (217-05)
4x1: UCLA 40.02 without fastest sprinter Randall Carroll (Spring FB)

Looks like David Klech is back competing - but not as a hurdler. He won the HJ today, and I don't think he competed in any other events.
