  • Quick Openers For Patton and Collins

Darvis Patton and Kim Collins opened the season with some quick 100 meter times. 9.89 (for Patton)and 10.02 for Collins with a wind for both of 3.2 (same heat) at the UT Arlington Invitational this weekend. Odd they way they do the coverage. These times intentionally did not make the agate in the newspaper due to the way they were entered as non-college entrants.

Even odder is the the way you described what happened. Patton beat the World Champion by more than a tenth of a second! It was only the second time he's ever beaten him. In saying that they "opened the season with some quick times," you could have been talking about two races on different continents. They were in the same race and one of them beat the other. That's what matters about their season openers. The times, being heavily wind-aided as they were, were meaningless.

Using the conversion calculator at http://desert.jsd.claremont.edu/~newt/t ... index.html converts 9.89 with a 3.2 wind at 130 altitude to 10.03. Given the scarcity of sub 10.00 times from last year I think meaningless overstates the case. And if you think that is a heavy wind you haven't been to Texas in the spring.
