how close was Eaton to Hardee's college record? Less than 1.5 seconds. A 4:20.59 (which he ran in Eugene at the 2008 Olympic Trials) would've been good for 9 more points in the 1500 and the CR. (Clearing another bar in the PV would've been good for 30 more points, so if he could've cleared the 5.15 he did at the PAC-10 championships he would've been over 8600).
Eaton just had the the best "running" decathlon ever, slightly bettering his point totals from last year (3777 in the 4 running events with a 10.35, 46.85, 13.85 and 4:20.75).
This week he earned 3815 in the 4 running events-10.37, 46.28, 13.68, 4:21.85.
It is so nice to see an American athlete go for broke to try for a record by running the 1500 as hard as he can physically do so. Now if he can just add 15 lbs and focus on the three throwing events a 9000 might be possible down the road: 2012?
