Ostapchuk 20, Vili 14. Vili can win only if she wins Zürich and Ostapchuk is 4th or lower. Ostapchuk is 6-0 over Vili so far this year.

We've been told that Vili wants to be known as Adams again. Don't know why, and don't want to rumor-monger but the logical explanation would be a divorce.

It wouldn't then take a Mentat to make the logical projection that if that's true it may well explain why she has been so far off form all year.

Didn't she switch coaches in April too?

So, like Gay, her major rival is compromised and an undefeated season is not quite as impressive as otherwise[?].

Even if Vili had been at her best in 2010, I don't think it would have been enough to beat Ostapchuk this year. Ostapchuk's consistency and series of marks this year are better than Vili's in her 2009 season.

You mean that Vili's marks were all below all of Ostapchuk's marks? Unless they are quite different, some of Vili's marks might well have been Ostaphchuk's and thus there would not be an undefeated season.

No, not all of Vili's marks were below Ostapchuk's. I'm just saying that Ostapchuk would have still had the edge (though not necessarily undefeated) in 2010 if Vili had been at her best.

way to try and undermine a female SP chances of being AOY

it is really scrapping the barrell to use the excuse that her main rival may (or may not) be changing her name, which may (or may not) mean she's getting a divorce. Of course if she is getting a divorce this will have compromised her season and therefore Ostapchuks achievenents are lessened
                  i deserve extra credit

Truly dominating seasons seldom feature very many top-form rivals. Oliver's AOY chances would look a lot less good if Robles was in '08 form. So yes, let's stick with what we actually have, not what we might. (Otherwise, Flumpy's Sanya pick suddenly starts looking even better...)

This sounds crazy coming out of my head because I am truely not a fan of Ostapchuk. I think she is a man! But I think the IAAF is way to insensitive to gender test athletes. If they could do it privately without a public scene, I would recommend it for her! With all that foolishness said, I think she does deserve the AOY award! Although at times it looks like he is holding back. She has clearly dominanted her event this year with consistency. Unlike Allyson Felix or any other sprinter. Big O competed against the Top 4 Olympic finalist in most of her competitions this year. Valarie Adams is a dear friend and one of my favorite throwers. I think this has been a difficult year for her technically. She is a professional and her private life should not be a factor. I think a bigger factor is that she is working on changing a few technical points in her technique and adapting to new coaching. 2011 she will win the World Champs and this will be a mute point.
