  • PLEASE READ- Server Maintenance

I'm sure many of you noticed that the server has been down. We had a hardware issue. We had already ordered a new server and will expedite getting everything moved to it. You'll note some oddities, like the timestamp on the message board. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm working on getting everything back to 100% as quickly as possible.

Thank God you're back. I had withdrawal symptoms around lunch time today and even logged on to letsrun for a Board fix. It was awful. I'm afraid I'm much too old and much too fact-grounded to be comfortable there.

Someone circulated their April the 1st joke about SFH suing RJ to the Canuck list yesterday. Thought it was for real.

        Re: PLEASE READ- Server Maintenance

I am at a school where they randomly ban web-sites that they think the students are wasting their time on, and I almost had a heart attack when I thought this was one of them. Whew - that was close one. I'm glad the librarians (excuse me, 'media specialists') didn't get a hold of the 'track sucks' thread or we'd be outta here.

and I thought that possibly my Corporate Big Brother Police had reviewed my Internet usage behind my back after hours, and had flagged me out !

I'm the Big Brother Police in our office so, trust me, I knew it was on their end immediately and told them not too very long after it happened.

                      Re: PLEASE READ- Server Maintenance

I forgot to metion that the message board will likely react more slowly than normal. I've had to put a kludge into place in order to get everything back up and running on the current server. I'm hoping to be running everything off the new server by Monday. But the way the Internet works when exactly all traffic shifts to the new server isn't within my control.

"kludge - Pronounced klooj. A derogatory term that refers to a poor design. Like hacks, kludges use nonstandard techniques. But, whereas a hack can connote a clever solution to a problem, a kludge always implies that the solution is inelegant."

                        or

"kluge /klooj/ [from the German `klug', clever; poss. related to Polish `klucz' (a key, a hint, a main point)] 1. n. A Rube Goldberg (or Heath Robinson) device, whether in hardware or software. 2. n. A clever programming trick intended to solve a particular nasty case in an expedient, if not clear, manner. Often used to repair bugs."

A term I use every day in my "real job." I try to avoid kludging something together at all costs. But "desperate times call for desperate measures."

Thank you, tafnut. I'm glad I'm not the only one on the wrong side of the computer literacy divide. I, too, went scurrying to my online dictionary when I saw Ben's message. For more on the word and its possible etymology, see http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=kludge

Kind of fun (from the above link): "From the old Scots 'kludgie' meaning an outside toilet."
