Roger Kingdom, the two-time Olympic high hurdles champ, has told a Pittsburgh newspaper that he's shooting for Athens at age 41. He needs to run 13.55 to qualify for the Olympic Trials in Sacramento.

Re: Kingdom Come
My money is on Malmo in the steeple and Virgin in the 10k.
Also think Stones has a shot in the HJ.
Heck, maybe even Pre will stage a comeback. Now that would be news!
I wonder if Ovett has been seen secretly training? (Mark, you better get the bath water ready!)

Re: Kingdom Come
I think top athletes, perhaps because they never really have to grow up, think they are invincible and will never die or grow old (just like young people generally). I can say from experience, at some point the body just won't do what it used to. I remember a few years ago, I got back into what I thought was decent shape and entered my first 10K in years. I set out at what I thought was a modest pace and very quickly realized I was slogging through an utterly miserable experience. And what Kingdom is proposing to do will not be "modest." He would do well to look at Joan Benoit in this year's marathon trials -- she went into it with realistic expectations for her age, and enjoyed the experience, if I remember correctly."Run fast and keep turning left."

Re: Kingdom Come
Wasn:t Rocky Marciano 137 years old when he beat Joe Lewis? If that is the case, AW can retire, refund NIKE his US 250K, work hard labor at Ford in Michigan for 93 years (to repay the community for its "coulda, woulda, shoulda" DM burdens and lost scholarship money), take a short break and train for the next 3, then see if he has the stuff in 2096.

Great for Roger. The issue that bothers me is come Trials time, assuming he's in the meet, the media will spend too much time talking about his comeback rather than focusing on the guys who are more legitimate contenders.
