  • Marshavet Myers, long jumper

I will admit I've only given this a brief look. But it appears that after a 5-year layoff she immediately added 12cm to her PR, went to #2 on the world list, and handily beat Brittney Reese.

Is this as significant a development as it appears to be?

2006 indoor NCAA champ, outdoor 2nd to Tianna Madison. You might expect some rust, but she has LJ chops. Her speed obviously is better, so perhaps not a big surprise what she did last night. Hopefully she sticks with it - lord knows we could use her in the event.

see all-time list on front page; not many American women have ever done 22s indoors (although Myers herself did it before)

Well, that was very much of a breakthrough for her given her outdoor best still lies at 'only' 6.65m where she isn't short of speed as her equal PB of 7.18 secs over 60m suggests. She looks like on the way to some substantial improvements and could even hit 7m outdoors.

              Re: Marshavet Myers, long jumper

I just got home from working W LJ at Tyson. Myers 6.83 in 5th Round was a Meet Record. She barely caught the back edge of the board...was about 6.98 (traversed) jump. Her pass in 6th round, when leading Reese 6.83 to 6.56, almost backfired. Reese jumping last improved to 6.64 in 5th round, Myers passed.. Reese's popped as last chance 4 cm foul, quietly and unofficially (but accurately) laser measured at 7. 08..(7.04 net).
The entire event was ragged. 28 fouls in 125 jumps. Only 2 perfect jumps(toe at foul line) only 3 fair jumps within 1 cm of foul line and 4 less than 1 cm fouls....too many to count took off a foot or more before or beyond the board..
Bianca Stuart had only one fair jump, 6.44 in third round, that stood up for 3rd place.
The top four places fouled in both 1st and 2nd round

My athletes and I have aways had enormous problems with indoor fouls. It seems as though every indoor facility's runways are completely different and just one inch difference in stride length in an 8-left approach is over a foot at the board. Add that to beginning of season inconsistencies and it's got step problems written all over it.

lonewolf - It's pretty common for people to struggle to find the board early in the season is it not? I also go the impression Myers was only taking 3 jumps regardless and wasn't necessarily out to "win" the event...once she put the 6.83 out there I suppose she and her coaches were comfortable with where she was to shut it down.

I'm glad to see Myers return to the pit. Seems like her work with JJK is paying off quickly.

Here's the video of her jump: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOuIO42uDKg

She did a good job there. She's having a good several months, dating back to last year.

True, early season meets tend to be erratic but, having seen a million of 'em, sometimes they are remarkably so.
I don't know what her pre-comp plan was but I think she was "in it to win it"..her first was a run-through, 2nd jump respectable but big foul.. she had to take cautious third jump to make the finals in 6th place at 6.26..moved to 3rd in 4th round..her 5th round winning 6.83 was one of the five "near perfect" on the board of the entire competition...you may be right that she was content with 6.83 because as the 6th jumper she passed before Reese hit 6.64..and I am sure she recognized Reese as a threat..
Thanks for the video link. I seldom get to see jumps from that angle and in their entirety.

Looking at making the WC team. I just love the fact with Marshavet back in the LJ it forces others(USA) to realize I have got to reach the 23' mark. If Howard is able to compete in the LJ that even helps it more.

I think people forget that standards in the wLJ have lifted a bit over the past few years. In Daegu there will be 3 Russians who have jumped 7m+, plus Brittany Reese, Naide Gomes and Maurren Higa Maggi. So you've got to figure 6.90m for a medal and over 7m to win it.

Thanks for posting the vid. I'm not a LJ coach, but it was easy to see how everything was about generating forward motion on the run up. Myers is such a smooth runner!

That is true especially in the US with forgetting the world standards now. Before this year with the exception of one Reese, others were content with hey I jumped 22'5" which is not going to get you any medals. That's not a series of 22'5"s, it's a bunch of 21's and one 22'5" for the season. I think a lot of jumpers get nervous when they see any 3 Russians in a competition.

I think it helps step-up the level of competition. As reported, Reese uncorked a monster jump in the 6th round even though it was a foul. Without Myers or Lowe or someone who would go out there and get it, Reese may not have had reason to push herself. I've never seen a situation where a reigning work champ is on a final jump trying to win the competition and people are filing out of the arena. I'm sure that's fuel to the internal fire.

Ultimately, I think it will bring the best out in Reese this summer and next. I see even more special coming from her and I hope Myers sticks with it because her overall athleticism could get her on the podium as well.
