the last time an american won boston was greg meyer in 1983, how long will this drought last, its getting so bad i think it may be possible for the womens winner to run faster than the top american at boston, this is sad. top american runners defend our most prestigious race.

Yeah, having the National Championships (Olympic Trials) marathon so close to Boston can have an effect on the top American men. Go figure.

Re: who will be next american to win the boston marathon?
AS I FEARED THE TOP 2 WOMEN AS WELL AS A 45 AND 44 YEAR OLD MAN BEAT THE TOP AMERICAN, WE NEED TO GET OUR TOP COLLEGIANS LIKE RITZENHIEM, THE STANFORD TEAM AS WELL AS OTHER COLLEGIANS AND EVEN SOME TOP HIGH SCHOOLERS INTO THIS RACE. ANYONE WHO CAN RUN SUB 350 FOR 1500, 9 MINUTES FOR 2 MILES, 1430 FOR 5K AND 30 FOR 10K CAN EASILY GO SUB 220 OR FASTER FOR THE MARATHON, OUR TOP RUNNERS USED TO ALWAYS SHOW UP TO RUN BOSTON TO REPRESENT THE USA IN THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS RUNNING RACE,BESIDES THE OLYMPIC MARATHON. NOW NONE OF OUR NAME RUNNERS DO, THE FIRST TRACK AND FIELD NEWS ISSUE I BOUGHT AND HAVE NOT MISSED SINCE, WAS A MID 70S ISSUE FEATURING AN ARTICLE ON BILL RODGERS, HE WAS ASKED WHO HE WOULD MOST LIKE TO RACE AGAINST, AND HE SAID HENRY RONO, OR MIRUTS YIFTER, UNLIKE TODAYS TOP RUNNERS HE DID NOT DUCK COMPETITION. ALBERTO SALAZAR ONCE SAID RUNNING AGAINST GUYS LIKE RONO AND SAMSON KIMOMBWA HELPED MAKE HIM THE RUNNER HE BECAME, THEN THE COLLEGE COACHES STARTED COMPLAINING OUR GUYS CANT COMPETE WITH THE OLDER KENYANS, SO THE RULES WERE CHANGED, AND I BELIEVE, BUT AM NOT SURE IT WAS JIM SPIVEY WHO SAID AMERICAN RUNNERS WOULD RATHER RUN 1340 FOR 5K AND WIN, RATHER THAN RUN 1310 FOR 5K AND LOSE. THE RESULT AMERICANS ARE VERY RARELY COMPETITIVE IN DISTANCE RACES, AND LIKE TODAY OUR TOP MAN CANT EVEN BEAT THE TOP GIRLS.

I don:t compete for your country, but my respective person-best times are faster than those you have posted. However, I have never run a marathon, and don:t plan on running an event that far. My body breaks down after 18 miles of steady state running, so not EVERYONE/ANYONE who can run those times you suggested can even complete a marathon.
Why on God:s green earth would you have Ritz run a marathon? Or the Stanford team? A high school kid? Would you be the same guy who would come back at the end of the fall season and say that the USA doesn:t have good cross country runners? What happens if that kid who ran 8.49 at Arcadia decided to follow your advice and run a marathon the following week - instead of trying to make it to his state meet and possibly the post season? He runs 2.20. College recruits going to line up for this kid:s services?
Long-term, some of these guys may be interested in pursuing the marathon as their next challenge. As of now, however, I think your best bet is to train a kick-ass guy who is sold on marathon running and has no track plans.

Re: who will be next american to win the boston marathon?
One of the main reasons that the best Americans were not at Boston or London this year is the fact the that both the Men and Womens US Marathon Olympic Trials were held in the past couple of months. Trying to copmpete again so quickly in the Marathon is not a good idea.
Also not everyone is a Marathoner.
Also the only reason why Boston times were so slow today is becuase it was 85 freaking degrees outside and its onl a few months before the Olympic Games. A 9 minute high school miler wouldn't have gone under 2:20 in these conditions.
Don't even think that just because you can run a mile fast or a 5k fast that you can easily transition to the marathon. It doesn't work that way for 99.5% of the competitors in those events.
A marathon is 26.2 times as far as a mile and 13.1 times as far as a 2 mile. That is a BIGGGGGGGGG difference.
I understand your frustration but Americans hardley ever does well in Boston in an Olympic year.

Re: who will be next american to win the boston marathon?
Aside from Bill Rodgers and Salazar and the last winner of course, the US wasn't dominant the premiere marathon in the US for years. It's a myth, most of the winners pre Rodgers weren't Americans, they just weren't a factory production line of Kenyans, and one Korean import model in 2001.........

What are you talking about? I realize that the key word above is "most", but by my count the score was(pre Billy):
USA-32
Canada-15
The rest of the entire world-31
That sure looks like domination to me.
