  • High Jump

With the Olympics coming up, would it be a good idea to get a discussion going about our fave event? It's a wide open event for both sexes and I think we can get some good opinions on who's going to make teams and win.

Also any ex-jumpers, make yourself known with you PB and your school. I was 2.20 in the late 70's and early 80's and graduated Clemson in '76.

I make Hestie Cloete the womens favourite ( I wish I could say Kajsa Berqvist but it's too early), and Stefan Holm the early mens favorite based on his winter season. What do you guys think?

Cloete if she is healthy. I thought I read something about injury. Holm would be the winter book choice, especially with Freitag out.

Bergqvist is now back to Olympic training - having just come off crutches. Kajsa is weight training and doing other sitting exercises. She is also cycling to increase her breathing conditioning. Traveling to Tunisia in mid-May to begin high jump training.

I'd have to agree with the fern, especially on the mens side. As an active jumper i'm just hoping to make it to the "big show".

My pick is Holm. Maybe he'll finally eclipse 2.40 (7'10.5"). I also think that Jermaine Mason and Jarsolav Baba will also be in contention. Clinger and Leeper (if really on their game) could also be in the top 5.
If you're ever walking down the beach and you see a girl dressed in a bikini made out of seashells, and you pick her up and hold her to your ear, you can hear her scream.

Ed, bought your book in HS, went on to jump 2.25. Thank you. Cloete, with a possible WR, and an unknown on the mens side.

                      Re: High Jump

At this point Holm is clearly the big favorite.
Jermaine Mason is out for the season after ruining his knee in his 2.32 attempt in Budapest during the WC.
I have been waiting for Boswell and Rybakov to step it up to the next level but at least Boswell seems to be stuck. Right now I would pick Holm, Baba and Rybakov for the medals. The best US jumper is clearly Nieto. He can medal.

How is your season going so far? Have you qualified for the trials yet? Go for it.

                            Re: High Jump

Mason injured himself at world indoors (knee ligaments unspecified) The surgery was done by one of my former lecturers, who stated that he should be able to start training in May all things being equal. I for one am not expecting a lot from him this year, maybe next year. I am waiting for Andra Manson to pop a really big one.

2.2475m in 1980! Wacked bar at 2.25m and remeasurement came in 0.0025 under; was rather rude to the judge.

                              Must be strangest ever progression: 2.05, 2.10, 2.15, 2.18, 2.21, 2.23, 2.24 (as it was listed), 2.27F.

Regarding books: I was at Mt. Sac about 6 years ago and stopped by the T&FN booth. Saw an old BAAB HJ book by Frank Dick and was totally taken aback to see my picture on the cover; whoever was manning the booth was a little surprised when I blurted out, "That's me!" (in my defense I hadn't seen it for almost 20 years)
