The runner-up to McMullen at the 1996 OT, Jim Sorensen, ran a 3.42,6 as a 36-year-old last summer in winning one of the CanAm races. He was actually coached by JOHN REMBAO during his 1996 season when he recorded 3.38,65 and 1.47 PRs.

Even Eric Nedeau came out of the woodworks with a 14.36 at Penn.

Can paul now make the jump to 3:36 - 3:38 range?
He seems to have quite a large frame for a miler. He must be at least 150lbs. Despite this he has posted a 3:34 1500.

I don't think hes been 150 lbs. since middle school. He has proven he can race himself into shape and be prepared when he needs to though. I think hes got a shot at Athens.

I don't think he's quietly moving towards the OT, either. I'm hearing passages from "Ride of the Valkyries" blaring on the horizon.

No one is going to believe me when I say keep an eye on Sorensen. Why would a 36-year-old (soon turning 37) who finished 2nd at the OT in 1996 - and who hasn:t improved on his PR in eight seasons - be a contender? Because after two weeks of training, he ran 3.52,8 on Saturday at CAL in finishing 3rd in the 1,500m. He tends to come around in May-June-July, and this year should be no different. His recent 10-12 weeks on the shelf with a calf and hamstring injury haven:t stopped him. I think this guy has more than 25 sub 3.45s -- including a 3.42,4 US #19 last summer. There is something distinctly different about Sorensen: he has desire, guts, and a winner-takes-all attitude. He hasn:t let injury derail him; he is a former wrestler. And as in his previous sport, he won:t get pinned down for the count when the pressure:s on!

It would be great if Sorenson was able to make a strong showing. I do remember him as being very determined and having great turnover. I think there is a common trait between Sorenson and McMullen - they both have that great, confident take-no-prisoners attitude - a prerequisite for success. With that attitude it may be possible. If they are convinced it is possible, half the battle has already been won.

With all of the former preps/collegiates CA has produced over the years - many who have long since hung up their spikes and joined the real world, it is refreshing to see that four former 1980s CA prep stars are still on the track and in some of the bigger races: Marc Davis (Stanford tonight, 5k), Mark Dani (Mt. Sac), Meb (Stanford, 10k) and Kira Jorgensen (Stanford, 5k).

Did you notice he ran 2nd in the F-Section Finals? 2 Jim Sorensen Nike Farm Te 3.49,22 ... not bad with 3 weeks of running after missing 12 weeks of training with both a hamstring and a calf injury!
