Event-specializing is reducing the likelyhood of having double sprint champions at major championships. Gone are the days when attempting a sprint double was the order of the day.

Re: Double sprint champions- rare!!!
Same can be said for all other distances. No more 800/1500 (Coe, Ovett), 5000/10,000 (Viren) or even 10,000/marathon (Shorter, Viren, Zatopek).
What we saw last summer from El G and Bekele doubling was extremely rare in recent years.

Re: Double sprint champions- rare!!!
CA Prep State 800m/1600m double is nearly as impossible. Jon Stevens (Fremont Mission San Jose, 1998) was the last successful boys double champion. I don:t have the stat books here, but I believe the double had not been accomplished in some 25-30 years before Stevens pulled it off. Coley Candaele (1990) had the biggest chance prior to Stevens, but after running a negative-split (63-64-57-62) 4.06,26 1,600m victory over Arroyo Grande junior Louie Quintana (4.07), Candaele had nothing in the tank for his 800m final.
(at least no 800m/1600m champion from 1957 - 1998: http://www.lhs.fuhsd.org/athletics/TRACK/statechm.pdf)

Wasn't Candaele at one time California's All-time prep football passing leader?

Re: Double sprint champions- rare!!!
I think the hardest double is 4/8. The other doubles are more similar I think. 1/2 Anaerobic/Anaerobic. 2/4 Anaerobic/Mostly Anaerobic. 8/1500 Aerobic/Aerobic 1500/5 Aerobic/Aerobic. I think going from 400 to 800 is where there is a major switch from mostly anaerobic to aerobic. Thus El Caballo's achievment is even greater than other doubles that have since been achievedwhy don't people pronounce vowels anymore

And he did it without benefit of schedule adjustments ... He did it the way it was laid out ... No special accomodations ...

From Vista Murietta High School:
"In addition to being an outstanding head coach, Coley excelled as a youth, prep, and collegiate student/athlete. From the ages of 7 through 14 he won 8 national age group cross-country and track titles. As a high school student/athlete (at Carpenteria HS) Coley played football as his team’s starting quarterback and captain. He led his team to a 38-3-1 record, 3 varsity league titles and 3 CIF Championships. He was also named All-CIF 2 Years and CIF Player-of-the-Year his senior season.Additionally, Coley ran track (800 meters and 1600 meters) and won 4 varsity league team titles, 7 individual CIF titles, 4 Master Meet titles, 1 State Title and was named CIF State Athlete-of-the-Year as a senior.Continuing into college, Coley was a collegiate student/athlete at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he earned the honors of All-American twice and Track Scholar/Athlete-of-the-Year."
