The European Team Championships point breakdown by sex shows some interesting results as usual. The general pattern, as ever, is that western European nations score more points in the men’s events or their men and women’s scores are pretty similar. However, the eastern European nations tend to score more points on the women’s side. Norway is the exception to the rule with their women scoring 27 pts more than their men, which is unusual for Western European nations. Romania and Russia in particular had a very big differential:
Romania - women scored 53.5 pts more than their men
Russia - women scored 43 pts more than their men
Czech Republic - women scored 34 pts more than their men
Ukraine - women scored 26 pts more than their men
Belarus - women scored 24 pts more than their men
Turkey, not a former Eastern bloc country but one that has imported a lot of athletes recently and has improved its athletics 'system', also had a 22 pt differential between their women and men. This is interesting considering women's participation is much lower than mens.
Is this 'culture' or have times not changes that much since the fall of the Berlin Wall?
