  • RIP Ric Sayre [?]

Ric Sayre, Ashland resident, one of only two American males to qualify for five Olympic Trials in the marathon, passed away this morning. Ric was 57, and looked at least 10 years younger, still in racing trim. He went for a run this morning, was talking to some neighbors afterward, and without warning, keeled over, dead.

Ric was a fixture at the Ashland Food Cooperative, where he was employee representative on the Board of Directors. He was as nice a person you could ever meet, and as humble as the summer solstice day is long.

Ashland Daily Tidings has a story verifying it (Wed. June 22). Says the cause is not immediately available.

Would have put the link but they appear to have one of those stupid, overly-obstructive websites. I just googled "Ric Sayre" and linked on.

Really sucks. He was a nice guy in the admittedly-short time I spoke with him; we bookended the top 10 at the Vancouver International Marathon one year. He was first--one of his 12 wins in 50 lifetime marathons, according to the ADT paper. His PR 2:12:59 came in winning the '86 Los Angeles race.

    RIP.
