    Re: Will Lifting affect Sprinting?

    Jonathan,

Speaking from my experience as a strength coach, I would be very reluctant to suggest a power lifting program for a competitive sprinter. I am much more likely to design a program based on the Olympic lifts. They are much more effective in generating the explosive power needed in a sprinter. In truth, I generally mix the Olympic lifts with assistance exercises and a strong plyometric program.
One aspect of strength training some times over looked, is the neurological component. Are we strengthing the neuromuscular pathways both relative to function and to fire at a rate similiar to the sports activity?
Seriously think about what you are trying to accomplish and then seek out the best guidance you can afford.

You should talk to a strenght coach so he can gear a weight training routine for the event that you do. The last thing you want to do is shape your body in direction that is counter productive to your event.

I don't know about sprinting but lifting will get you in big trouble in the walks.

Do you specifically mean "power lifting" or normal weight training? One need only look at the physiques of modern sprinters to see that weight training (and maybe even power lifting?) is a requisite part of the training regimen.

Will a power lifting program in the off season negatively affect your speed when the season starts again?
