  • A decidedly average Long Jump post

I've been playing around with the all-time LJ performance list and thought I'd share the findings.

    Using http://www.alltime-athletics.com/mlongok.htm (so 2376 legal jumps of 8.20+, outdoors and in, including ancilliary), I've generated averages for a jumper's top 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 jumps all-time (i.e. when said jumps are 8.20+).

    So here we go...

Average of Top 5 jumps (30 highest averages from 77 jumpers with 5+ jumps)

Average of Top 50 jumps (the list is thinning!):

        1 Carl Lewis USA 8.636
        2 Iván Pedroso CUB 8.540
        3 Mike Powell USA 8.506
        4 Larry Myricks USA 8.500
        5 Dwight Phillips USA 8.426
        6 James Beckford JAM 8.408
        7 Irving Saladino PAN 8.391
        8 Erick Walder USA 8.347

        Top 100:

        1 Carl Lewis USA 8.551
        2 Iván Pedroso CUB 8.461
        3 Larry Myricks USA 8.441
        4 Mike Powell USA 8.422

        2 Iván Pedroso CUB 8.404
        3 Larry Myricks USA 8.401

        His top 200 average = 8.3686
        His top 250 average = 8.34024

Counts (all folks with 20+, then active jumpers who are 5+):
        271 Larry Myricks
        179 Iván Pedroso
        171 Carl Lewis
        162 Mike Powell

Re: A decidedly average Long Jump post

Seeing Jason Grimes in the list brought back some memories.

That guy had more vertical height on his jumps than anyone I can remember. He would hit the board like he was bouncing off rubber.

Don't recall too many others with his triple hitch-kick style, either.

          (Nice work, btw)

Seeing Ralph Boston on that list caught my attention. Beamons miracle at Mexico City has definitely helped over shadow just how good Boston was.

Does this include indoor marks? Beamon's other four average just 8.283 and his next five less than 8.13.

Only 2cm behind Portugese record from Calado... and a 31 cm improvement on his old PR (from earlier this year)

So, Carl Lewis' average of top-100 jumps (8.551) is better than the 10th best average of top-5 jumps (Kareem Streete-Thompson, 8.528)? Wow! How does this level of dominance compare to the best for any other event?
