The IAAF published very detailed statistics about the world championships in T&F. Here are some of the interesting facts that I picked up about the US performances.
USA (men) has never...
Fail to score the highest total points and are likely to continue in Deagu
Fail to medal in the 110h and are likely to continue this streak
Been worse that fifth in the 100m and Dix and/or Gatlin should maintain this record.
Been outside the three classic sprint finals (100&200&400) and should continue this year
Been outside the SP top 8 and should definitely do so this year
Fail to place in the top 8 in the LJ - with only 1 American in the top 15 maybe this year the streak will break
Place in the first two in the 800 and are not likely to do it this time
Has never placed in the top 5 in the 10K - maybe this time?
Never won a medal in the 3000 SC - and will not win it this time
Never won a medal in the HT - Kibwe Johnson can change this record
fail to reach the final in the 400h only once (2001) and are unlikely to repeat this embarrassment
In spite of all the great decathletes never won two medals - Hardee and Eaton may change this
