  • Mal Florence's Death

Mal was one of the truly great writers, working for the LA times from 1951 until his death last Friday. Loved Track!! Great story from the opening ceremonies in Rome in 1987. I was with him in the press box and at the end of the opening ceremonies, 3 Italian jets buzzed the stadium spewing out red, green and white smoke. And we were seated in the Italian section! Mal never missed a chance to nail someone or some situation. As the planes exited the stadium, Florence blurts out, "Funny, when I was chasing them in '44, the smoke was all black." The Italian journalists were not amused. A stitch.
