I don't understand the thinking behind putting Fountain third :? OK, so she was sick at the NC, but her recent results don't suggest she's in medal-winning form at all.

I'd love Chernova to finally get it right. IMO she has a lot more potential than anyone else in this event; the problem is she's just never able to perform consistently in all events in a competition.

I often don't understand the rationale on these things; sometimes it just seems SBs are taken into account and there's no real thought on previous pedigreee, sometimes we get weird picks like Fountain for 3rd.

I would be very surprised if both Scwharzkopf and Bogdanova finish outside the top ten, neither of which appear in this list. Bogdanova had a big improvement in 4 weeks from under 6000 to over 6200 (in the pouring rain) and Schwarzkopf was close to 6400 in Ratingen and PB'ed in the 100h, despite having poor jumps. They aren't medal candidates but should be challenging for a top 10 place.

I don't see Fountain in the top 6. Dobrynska is the big :?: again after a mediocre Gotzis. She's only competed once since then, but she equalled her HJ best and did a decent (for her) 100mh, so could be dangerous. For me, Ennis will win, then it's between Chernova, Oeser and Dobrynska, so the top 4 from Barcelona again, but likely with a different order from 2-4.

For some reason the organisers have missed Dobrynska's 13.70 hurdles best this season, and taken her 14.04 from Gotzis instead. She's been put in the slowest heat whereas she should be in heat 2. This may benefit as she can run her own race, but she wont have any competition to run off.

Schwarzkopf will get swallowed up in heat 1 and Ennis and Fountain, the two strongest hurdlers on paper, are at opposite ends of the track in lanes 8 and 1.

Chernova is in heat 2 when really should have been in heat 1 instead of Schwarzkopf (I guess they tossed a coin as both set 13.32 PBs this year) and I think may benefit from this, not having the fast women around her.

Ennis just ran 12.94 and Fountain 12.93

Ennis starts well with 12.94 (12.95 in Barcelona and 12.93 in Berlin). Chernova equals her PB with 13.32 and Dobrynska seems to have gauged her preparations right once again with a PB by 0.01. Oeser was two-tenths down on her PB although something in the 13.3 range is about the norm for her. Fountain back in shape too with 12.93.

After the decathlon where everyone underperformed, the heptathlon started out much better, with loads of PBs. Fountain and Dobrynska are both looking like they are back to their best, and I'm very happy for Karolina Tyminska improving her best from 13.35 to 13.12.

Ennis hasn't been looking great in the high jump - two failures at 1.86m.

Ennis clear at 1.86m. 8-) Had she failed that, it would have been her worst high jump in a heptathlon since the European Juniors in 2005.
