Re: Leonel Suárez's coach = coolest ever [see photo]

I've said it before and I'll say it again, state support of athletes makes a huge difference. Look at our country, when kids are in school they get great training, they graduate from college, they have no place. Britain was great at this for many years and it accounted for their success back in the day IMHO.

Don't get me wrong it is amazing how much they can do when it is obvious they don't have the resources.

The poles, in part, represent the trade blockade with Cuba. Apparently he has a few poles in Europe that he does not have in Cuba (PVP?). While clearly there are financial constraints, the poles are not the best characterization of it.

Not sure but he may be former javelin thrower Dionisio Quintana.I recall his being one of their national coaches at the Paris Worlds but don't know why he would be coachhing the decathletes. As far as I know the decathlon/heptathlon coach is Raul Duany.

Cuba is by far not a country with the best equipment.
            Just look at both photos:

Track and Field is all about genetics, Fast twitch muscles.
Even with shit training you can go anywhere, just by being a genetic freak.

Quintana may be coaching just the javelin or all throws for the multis.
              Here's a photo of him from 2005.

The gymnasium at the athletics stadium opposite the Lenin school where a lot of their promising athletes are housed has a fair amount of equipment but nothing like multi-station machines and the facilities at the stadium itself have seen better days.Having said that,it seems to work well for the Cubans. However the IAAF's attempt to designate Cuba as the venue for a regional high performance training center for jumps and throws has failed miserably.Of the athletes who have gone there from the Eastern Caribbean to train, with a view towards reaching the elite level, only James Grayman of Antigua could be said to have met with noticeable success.Yhe same holds true for the High Performance Center in Jamaica, which is suypposed to cater to the region's sprinters.Daniel Bailey has developed well but there have been few others. And he was already a World Youth and World Junior 4th placer prior to going there.

                      Dayron Robles rips training conditions
                      January 31, 2012
"They don't give you the necessary things for training so you're always upset, and what's worst is that people generally don't know anything about it and will judge me by the results," Robles said. "Nobody comes around to ask about anything, but they do come to demand results."

After a breakthrough 2011, Lázaro Borges dreams higher in 2012
                      February 02, 2012
In Europe, Borges found a second home in the Spanish city of Pamplona. “It would have been impossible to achieve this without their support during a training camp there. They provided me with the poles to reach higher goals, especially the195lb 14.2 one I used to clear 5.75, 5.85 and 5.90 in Daegu. I will always be grateful to them.”
