  • 2011 AOY

Yeah, I know it's still early. But I think Sally Pearson has this wrapped up! Undefeated against all comers, World Champion, #2 time ever (#1 in my mind). Even if she loses after the WC her season stands out among everyone else.

The men's AOY is a bit tougher: Bolt? Rudisha? If Farah wins tonight he should be up there. Anyone else?

Pearson is the favorite, and the person I think AOY should go to at the moment.

If Ostapchuk couldn't get AOY, I guess Adams is unrealistic too. But her season is actually quite similar to Pearson's - both have been dominant and won a world championship with a 1980s-like winning mark.

Vivian Cheruyiot is a serious candidate - a dominating double world champion as well as cross country world champion with a great 5000 meter time this year.

Has Montsho's year been noticeably worse than that of SRR when she won AOY?

Jeter almost won the double - but VCB almost did that, too. I think any USA bias in previous selections has been slight, at most, so I don't think that will help her either. Her 100m time is plenty good, in any case.

Kaniskina is the biggest championship lock in women's events, year after year.

If Rudisha runs a WR in Rieti, he could (should) be AOY.

Bolt has the one Boltian race this year, otherwise he's only been excellent. He's in the conversation in any case.

Harting has been excellent. You can't say he has chased winds either. A 70 meter throw in one of the last meets of the season, and he could be a good candidate?

    Koji Murofushi, just because.

      Re: 2011 AOY

in WC years, winning is huge, of coruse, and frequently seals the deal. With end-of-August scheduling, this year probably does it way more than usual.

By way of comparison, note that after Berlin in '09, when the DL meets were still part of the GP Circuit, after the Worlds not only were there—like this year—Zürich/Brussels/Zagreb/Rieti, but also Gateshead and the World Athletics Final. And then on to Shanghai and Daegu, both of which were in May this year.

I agree with Sally ... the win yes, the winning season yes, but the margin between those two times and the rest of the world in the last 11 years is huge.. it would be like Adams throwing 22m or Li throwing 73m,

to break a WC record set during the 80s after doing the rounds simply amazing....

I can't wait to check the times from last year and see how many finish between 12.47 and 12.67, compare with 12.28 to 12.48 ..simply amazing..

and not sure how well known this is but I don't think he coach ever coached a hurdler before, they are a great team ..

I'm pretty sure that Sally lost her 2nd race in Europe, i can't remember where it was but i'm sure she did. I'd be very happy for Sally or Vivien to win (it will probably go to sally for PR purposes) We also shouldn't forget Betty Heidler who's actually set a WR and been head and shoulders above her rivals but has yet to win the World gold.

Farah did indeed win the 5k, so he's in the mix now.

Pearson stands alone as the women's AOY.

For the men, it's between 3:

                Rudisha
                Undefeated, World Champ, list leader.

                Farah
Undefeated in the 5k, World Champ (5k), list leader in both 5k and 10k.

                Bolt
Undefeated in the 200, World Champ (200), list leader in 200, top 5 ranking in 100.

For me, it's between Farah and Bolt. Who would you pick?

                  Men:
If Bolt runs a 9.6x or a faster 200, him.
If Rudy breaks the 800 WR, him.
If Hardee goes to Talance and scores 9000, him.

                  Women:
If VCher breaks the 5K WR, her.
                  If Adams goes 22, her.
If Sally goes 12.2x again, her.

If no one does these things: Bolt and Sally.

Also, you've left no room for Mo. I think he's clearly in the mix.

Unless he does something miraculous in the next few weeks Bolt doesn't come close.

He's only run about 4 races and looked dodgy in all of them until the 200m at the WC's. And the 100m DQ can't just be dismissed.

At the moment it's Mo and Rudisha with both needing to run faster to confirm it although at the moment Mo's near double does it for me.

Sally Pearson is my favourite athlete but Vivien can't be dismissed so easily.

                          WXC Champ
                          Undefeated
                          No3 5k ever
                          World Champs double

i think she can go much faster over 5k her 14.20 run was solo with good pacemaking i think she could approach WR problem is no one can pace that fast
                          i deserve extra credit

I think Vivian is ahead of Sally at the moment.

Sally's run was more eye catching but Viv has had the better overall season.

If she runs really fast by the end of the season she definitely gets it.

But just watch them find a way to make sure Darya Klishina wins

8-) DINGDINGDINGDINGDINGDINGDINGDING!!! 8-) That 12.28 is damned hard to ignore, especially when she started the year at 12.48. But then again, what if Viv breaks 14:10 or possibly 29:50, or both? That is very deep into Chinese territory.

Then there is another possibility that hasn't been mentioned: Has Jeter lost a 100 race this year? I don't think so. Regardless, given that she generally runs very fast, very late in the season, she could quite literally rip it out of the hands of Sally or Viv by running 10.61.
