Harley Tinkham, known as the Ace, was perhaps the best track writer around for almost 40 years. He loved the sport and covered it for most of his years with the Times. He and Mal were great friends, graduating from SC in 1947 together. Well, the two of them together were absolutely brutal and you had to be on your toes in any discussions with them. So Mal's first trip to Europe was to cover the 83 champs in Helsinki. He then went on to Berlin to do the ISTAF meet and while there, found a post card with a beautiful German church. He wrote on the back of the card as follows: "Ace, Here's one we missed. Mal." I believe Times Sports Editor Bill Dwyre still has the card, finding it in Harley's desk after his death some 10 years ago.
