  • athens progress?

Anyone know if the roof is on the stadium yet? According to the article linked below, it was due to be put on last week (behind schedule) but is sure to go forward sometime this week. "Entirely feasible," says an official. The track is being poured and surely will be done before they expect to run the Greek national championships there in mid-June, but only half the seats will be in place, or maybe less, since the seats that have been delivered do not fit in place properly (minor problem for which a solution will be announced very shortly:-). An official is quoted as saying that one day soon we will awake and the roof will be in place! Put on the ruby red slippers and click your heels three times and it will happen...

These pictures were on the Athletics Canada site going back to January. The last one is interesting.

Take a look at the webcam linked to Natasha's posting. Less than 100 days to go... Seriously, what happens if the venues are NOT ready?

That's why the IOC just took out that multi-million dollar insurance policy--NOT a sign of great confidence in what Athens will be able to do.

Track events can take place in Stadiou Street. Traffic may be interrupted for the finals but I can't be so sure about the preliminaries. Runners may have to race the cars at the same time. Field events can take place in Syntagma square. Cappuccinos can be served between throws. Another option is to move all field events to Olympia (as they did with the shot put). The Marathon race and the walks should be OK. You don’t need a stadium anyway for those events. The swimming competition (along with sailing, rowing, canoe and synchronized swimming) can take place in the Saronic Gulf. Just don’t drink the water. Don’t have time to think about the rest of the events now, but I am sure that the Greek ingenuity will find appropriate places for everything.

"Police also believed the bombings were linked to domestic groups and not international terrorism."

I'm not sure how one could tell so quickly whether it was domestic or international, nor how it matters all that much to the things (or people, not this time at least) blown up.
