(Coach Curtis Frye's) decision to allow 16 members of the USC track and field team to go on a dinner cruise on Lake Murray is curious. During the cruise, Frye had "impermissible off-campus recruiting contact" with a recruit. Frye has been one of the most successful coaches on the USC campus for a long time, but his actions as set forth in the NOA surely fall under the "What were you thinking?" department. Will it be enough to warrant the dismissal of Frye? Maybe not. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if Frye "retires" after the 2012 spring track season.

So is this a major "violation",or something that was just ill advised ? I can see clearly if they had a recruit onboard the boat, but the team going together on the cruise ? Who paid for it? Was that part out of line ? :?

Cruise was paid for by the booster to the tune of $3350. Any benefits not also available to the general student body are illegal(Bylaw 16.01.1, 16.01.3).

Re: South Carolina T&F Under NCAA Investigation
NCAA rules Failure to Monitor in relation to South Carolina track and football programs. Curtis Frye banned from coaching at this week's Penn Relays, and track recruiting visits are limited to 50 total for men and women.
Re: South Carolina T&F Under NCAA Investigation
This one slipped under my radar. It also is difficult to understand. But I fastened for the following in that 27 April 2012 ESPN College Football paper:
NCAA committee on infractions chairman Britton Banowsky said it was obvious early on that South Carolina wanted to get at the truth and in some instances did more than was required during the enforcement process.
"They took the interview process and discovery process to a higher level," Banowsky said.
"Wanted to get at the truth." "Did more than was required." "....to a higher level." Wow!
I am constantly amazed by how stringent - how "good" - you Americans can be in pursuit of the truth.
I contrast that with the traditional cover-up mentality of my British athletics establishment from Southern Counties Veterans Athletics Club (SCVAC), British Masters Athletics Federation (BMAF), to UK Athletics and England Athletics.

Maybe that's why they are being investigated -- i.e., Under what circumstances could a booster think it's acceptable to behave like this in relation to a non-revenue sport?!! I hope they get to the bottom of this, toot sweet.
