    Re: Marathon Records (women)

As a complete fanboy of Radcliffe, I couldn't help but let the inner conspiracy theorist get the better of me for a sec and speculated about the possibility that PR gave the IAAF a green light to do this before her run in Berlin on Sunday. Then I remembered this was 2011 and Radcliffe is probably closer to a nursing home than 2:15

There once was a time when we had only World Bests in the marathon and that seemed to cause no problem. Then the IAAF gets involved and chaos ensues.

Given the differences in marathon courses, WB seems about all you could ask for.

Exactly. Add in fickle weather conditions and it all gets silly.

Absolutely. No two marathon races can ever truly be "the same"; every one comes with it's own, unique *, which is just fine. The attempt to jam all these odd-shaped pegs into a standard "WR" round hole is completely misguided.

Probably referred to Zurich 1997, 12:41.86. My favourite long distance race of all time, for obvious reasons

Absolutley agree, how can you have a worlds record in anything if every particular event location might be completely different. What is odd is 2:15 was called a world record and now 2:17 is called a world record when neither of them actually are.
                  phsstt!
