Ollie Matson did in fact win bronze in the 400m in Helsinki but the 4 X 400 finished 2d behind Jamaica.

Everybody knows Matson won the bronze, I was talking about that gold medal. I've used.."what NFL running back won an Olympic bronze...."...a few times.

Trindon Holliday is on the Texans Practice Squad.

The problem here is that the line which defines "world class" is far different for a layman (iow a non track fan) than it is for a track fan.

I got into a debate with a baseball fan regarding former CFer Bernie Williams on this very subject. His claim was that Bernie "almost" made the Puerto Rican Olympic team. While I know Bernie was a good long sprinter as a youth, there's no evidence that he was anywhere near the Olympics for his native land and had be been a US HS student might not have amounted to much at all. At a certain point it became a debate which became pretty fruitless because the guy just could not produce anything other than "he knew it".

          So true.

I have no problem with ..."he has great speed". It's when they try to actually get specific and don't know enought to go there.

People get quickness and speed confused, there are also those who are super in a 20, they have a great burst/first step and can manuevar while at near full speed. There is also an illusion. That is the fact that those trying to run with them aren't that fast themselves so we see things in abstract. We see Devin Hester blowing by guys, guys who couldn't break a 4.6.

          The fastest footballers ever were...

          Leonard Scott....Tennessee
          John Capel...Florida
          Xavier Carter....LSU
          Trindon Holliday...LSU/Texans
          Jacoby Ford...Clemson/Raiders
          Bob Hayes...FAMU/Cowboys
          Ron Brown...ASU/Rams
          Sam Graddy...Tenn/Raiders
          Alvis Whitted...NCSt/Raiders
          Darrell Green..Tex A&I/Redskins

All ran a sub 10.10 (can't go with Jimmy Hines)

There is no..."he sure looks fast out there.."...those above all proved the speed and have the credentials to back it up.

Avante. I know they weren't talking about the 4 x 100, and am in agreement that "they" generally don't have any idea about what they are talking about. For many of them, they are just "playing telephone," and the results show it.
