  • Ato Boldon on the Cool Down:"There was more money in my day"

    http://www.universalsports.com/video/as ... n+brussels
    Around the 11:40 mark

He mentioned something about there being more money to go around to all athletes regardless of their stature and that's the reason why there were so many great matchups in his generation of sprinters versus todays where you cant even get the top sprinters to run against each other 2 or 3 times a year. I understand that the recession may have something to do with the salaries that the sprinters are getting but how could it be possible that there was more money in T&F back when Ato was running as opposed to today. I'm having a hard time understanding that.

Don't know anything about the $$$$$. What I do know is back in Ato's day we saw a different breed of cat. Donovan Bailey faced everyone numerous times as did everyone else. What we see today is weak. Where's the manhood? Where's that need to beat the best? These guys today... . Watch the creativity involved next season as these guys try to evade each other. I bet we see a meet where...

    Tyson Gay in a 400m
    Usain Bolt in the 200m
    Asafa Powell nursing some ailment
    Yohan Blake in the 100m

That was stupid, obviously no meet can afford all those guys.

I suspect that Ato's point is that what money there was was spread more broadly, i.e., more evenly, among the top 6 or 8--rather than the "superstar take all" scenario that we've been heading towards.

I thought I was the only one who thought that all this ducking and dodging was annoying. The women always run against each other numerous times but the men can't because it's about money.

It's because the athletes of his day slaughtered the goose that was laying the golden eggs with the neverending doping scandals. The same situation exists in cycling, with some of the best teams in the world unable to get sponsors, including HTC-Highroad, the #1 ranked team in the world. 10-15 years ago, it was common for teams to have multiple riders making seven figures, with half of them making six figures, but those days are over with.

As long as the biggest risk that dopers face is banishment from the sport, athletes will continue to dope.

How many people have an occupation in which they're indifferent to how much income they make?

There's nothing new about dodging the competition, especially in championship year. Coe and Ovett did it religiously back in the early 1980s.

Of course. And how many times did Walker and Bayi meet head to head? None of this is remotely new.

Then why is the dodging phenomena defining the 'Asafa Era of Sprinting" as a dodging era?

I thought he meant more price money and lower appearence fees.

You have to factor in the contractual incentives as well. It's in most if not all contracts now(unless your agent is sub-par) that if you are ranked #1 etc, you'll be paid X amount of dollars. So in this case you may lose a #1 ranking bonus if you race against a top athlete and lose. 8-)

Next year we will probably see more dodging, especially among the Jamaicans because they have the"abundance problem " for Sprinters now like the Americans have had for decades. And the financial factor of rankings, bonuses, and appearance fees.

Dodging the competition ... leadership void in the US ... history of PED use by Ms Jones and others ... silly Diamond League format ... death of indoor meets ... all evidence that track does more, than any other sport, to ruin itself rather than help itself.
