I just watched the Fox Sports broadcast of the Big 12 Track and Field Championships today, and the number of really quality athletes that were in that meet is quite impressive. I think my rough count of the IAAF 2004 top list performances from the meet in Norman was something like 29.

Some people to really watch closely from that conference as their careers unfold:

Darold Williamson and Jeremy Wariner of Baylor U in the men's 400m. These two guys have the four fastest times in the world thus far this year. I'm aware that a lot of the top athletes in the world in this event are not concentrating on meets at this time, but these guys should definitely be watched.

Williamson was awarded the Big 12 men's T&F athlete of the year, but the real story is Warimer. He DQ'd in Norman for one bad step outside his lane, or he would have had the fastest time in the world this year. He is only 19, and a real threat to the world junior record in the 400m. From watching him, his form is virtually flawless, and he exhibits a stamina in this event that easily exceeds Williamson's.

Wariner could break 44 before the Olympics, and he is my dark horse for the Olympic gold. Don't scoff, the 53 fastest 400m times run in history have all been logged by runners from the USA.

I peg Wariner as a serious contender to break Michael Johnson's staggering world record in that event. He's that good.

Another to watch is DaBryan Blanton of Oklahoma. He came to that school as a football player, but when he ran a 10.07 to set the American junior record last year, he was transferred to the track scholarship list. When he ran that time it was only .01 off the existing world junior record. He's never run in a major meet, but he's the current NCAA champion in the indoor 60m. When he ran in the 100m final in Norman, it was against a strong wind in somewhat chilly temps, and he had a lead on the field of about 4 meters at the 60 meter mark. He slowed due to a tightening hamstring or he would have won the event by more than 3/10 of a second.

From watching him, he has good strength but questionable sprinter technique. I can imagine him improving his best time 3% or more in time. That's world record territory.

There are just so many more outstanding athletes from the meet. For instance, five of the eighteen best times in the world for 2004 in the women's 200m were recorded on 5/1. Not bad for just a silly conference meet.

The Big 12 will have a number of Olympians this year, but probably a small number from the US. For instance Williamson has dual citizenship, and I believe he won't compete in the US trials because one bad race would mean elimination. He isn't sure yet what he will do.
