  • Wisconsin adidas Invitational XC Friday 10/14

The biggest college meet of the regular season (biggest except NCAA finals) takes place Friday afternoon at the Wisconsin Zimmer XC course. There will be about 40 teams each for the men and women, including a majority of the ranked teams in the country (19 men, 18 women). The will all be in the same race rather than in a Blue and a Gold race often used in large fields.

The course is similar to La Vern-Gibson at Indiana State (used for many NCAA meets), but is on natural soil, not a clay cap over a land fill. As I understand it T&FNews poster and "marathon guru Sean Hartnett" helped structure the course (he is a geography prof with GIS specialization).

It is a rolling but not hilly course on a very even grass course with no cart paths etc. (it is next to the University Ridge UW golf course and tended by the same folks). Wisconsin will host the Great Lakes Regional next year (to the consternation of some, apparently). Parking will be an issue (buses from two designated locales) for this meet but the November timeframe makes it possible to use the surrounding farm fields for Regionals/NCAAs. I think one of the largest crowds for an NCAA XC meet ever was when they held it in Wisconsin in the 1980s and if they host it again it will get a big following (10,000?, after having several thousand for the Big Ten meet there last year).

Flotrack will be covering the race for the first time

I'd love to go but have to work. Shame they could not run the A races later.

Re: Wisconsin adidas Invitational XC Friday 10/14

Two pretty good races with some surprises, Washington and [i]Vanderbilt/i] beat everyone else, including Stanford in 6th and Oregon in 8th (with Reid ahead of Hasay in the finishing straight but my an easy 2.5 seconds), with other Oregon runners not doing their part (Kesselring, Crossman and Friday were 122, 145 and 162). It was cool and very windy, slowing times and making people reticent to set off from the front of the pack.

On the men's side Wisconsin dominated, running in group with 1.8 seconds between #1 and #5. They looked more 'within' themselves than others. However Bayer, Indiana's #1 has not yet run (injuries) and they are also sending a team to Indiana State with athletes that have not run there much, including couple guys that would have been in the 3/4/5/6 range.
