ADAM NELSON OUT OF PRE CLASSIC SHOT PUT

Eugene, Oregon--Adam Nelson, currently the No. 1 shot putter on the IAAF World Rankings list, has withdrawn from this Saturday's Prefontaine Classic Grand Prix due to a back injury. Replacing Nelson will be American collegian Christian Cantwell, who currently is the world's second-farthest thrower of the 2003 outdoor season, at 69-5 1/4 (21.16). The man with the farthest throws of the season, Kevin Toth (No. 2), is still entered in the Pre Classic shot, as are John Godina (No. 4), and Justin Anlezark (No. 7) of Australia.

Good move picking up Cantwell. I just watched him at the Big 12 Champs, and he is clutch. Myerscough threw down the gauntlet on his last throw, but Cantwell responded big. It went like this (apologies to you non-metric types):

    Myerscough
FOUL 19.75 FOUL FOUL FOUL 20.99m
    Cantwell
    19.92 FOUL 20.75 FOUL 20.28 21.03
"Run fast and keep turning left."
