  • USA Today on US milers

belaboring the obvious (to us, at least) is this article in today's edition:

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics ... lers_x.htm

at least we are getting some press, even if it is the usual doom and gloom.

SOMEWHERE there is a young man, probably a non white, with 45 400 speed who can do it for the US or other non - African country, HE will need a dad like TIGER has and work as hard as African athletes.

Before Tiger's dad, there was Wayne's dad. Tiger is close but he ain't Wayne yet.

I resent Masback saying the US has never been good at the mile. In 1982 the US had 3 milers in the IAAF top ten. That year US milers were ranked 1st in the world. Maybe Masback is trying to make mile running look better under his reign by saying the US was never that good at the event in the first place. It has be nearly 7 years since an American miler has been ranked in the IAAF top ten. That is the longest streak ever for an American miler not to be ranked in the international top ten.

It is truly amazing that a nation with a diverse population and advantaged training facilities can only get two 1500 meters runners with the Olympic A standard. That is just sad.

Actually, Masback doesn't say that. He says we have never been good at the 1500 in the Olympics or WC, except for a few isolated cases that he mentions. And he is right. Ryun is the last American to get a medal in the Olympics and the only one in the last 50 years.

Niet. Try Wayne of "The Great One" fame. Excellent.

Walter still lives in the same house. Don't know if he still floods the rink.

Satch, you should see Robbie Earl play hockey for U of Wisconsin. What a talent! And the kid is from California, just a freshman, too.

Re: USA Today on US milers

EL G is Caucasian. He isn't European of course. Heehee :0!

Since Ryun ran 2:46 (last 1200) to finish up his WR 37 years ago, I'd be willing to bet at his peak he would be right in the thick of it today. He's as white as they come, of course. Steve Scott wasn't bad, was he? Dumb running in '84, and a bit too old in '88. The US just doesn't have a lot of people interested in track, period. Tons of people give it a go in the third world, but not in more developed areas. Soccer is king. Except in the US, where it's Playstation, then football, baseball, in-line skating, skateboarding ...

A lot of what is seen is due to lack of participation. Look at the fields at the last couple of WC's. El G and a bunch of Euros. Sure, Lagat too, but with what happened to him, I can't buy that he's clean. (Look at what WADA says about false positives in EPO tests)

Satch400 sounds like a few guys I've heard hoping the Minn. guys in the 400 blow up, or don't peak, or get hurt in the 400, so they don't "...ruin things." And commenting that that "Greek dude" must be juiced to the gills, while ignoring everything that's come out regarding American sprinters the last couple of decades.

Masback needs to be kicked aside.

Looking at Tiger, well, there hasn't been a deluge of top notch black golfers, so maybe it's time to credit his Asian mom instead. After all, there are a lot of good Asian golfers ; ).
