  • More on Rupp (115 mpw); May pull a Webb

Excerpts from SportsTribune (by way of Mens Racing):

    http://www.portlandtribune.com/archview.cgi?id=24225

<< "At the beginning of the track season, Rupp regularly ran as many as 115 miles per week and started running times that were borderline world-class." >>

"Rupp started out as a soccer player at Central but quickly became one of the top cross country runners in the state. He hopes to win state track titles in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters and now has his sights set on qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 5,000. And he was headed for a college running program until his coach, Alberto Salazar, suggested he consider skipping college for a while and training full time." >>

The only things Rupp and Webb have in common in this thread is that they make decisions that are in the best interest of them selves and family. I hope they both continue to ignor the expectations of people that don't know them.

That is what this statement, "May Pull a Webb" was about: There is not enough space to write a subject line: "Galen Rupp (115mpw); May skip college to train really hard, try to be very competitive as Prefontaine lurks around the corner, and may possibly skip college for a while during his early 20s to pursue track."

He has good coaching and is pursuing what works for him. Kristee Davidson of Fort Worth Christian is trying for her fourth-straight 800m state title (4A), and third-straight 400m title. Unprecedented and almost unreal. Her mother was also a good runner, but Kristee is pursuing basketball in college instead of track. It is her love and her choice.

Add this to Web(b)sters if you:d like:

Pull a Webb (v)- to pursue a course or take action based on best interest and personal fulfillment despite the actions and reactions of others on the other side of the playing field; to also deny oneself the satisfaction of immediate fulfillment and success in the pursuit of progressive, long-term goals and ideals.

Don:t read too much into things, man.

'Pull a Webb' is a neutral idiom. It has neither positive nor negative connotations. It is the same as a 'LeBron' or what countless baseball, soccer and other sports' athletes do - go for a life dream while they are fully capable of it. There's an upside and a downside, but it is wholly their own decision to make.
