Re: T&FN announces Athletes Of The Year

DQs, at least by the rules that all track statisticians use, are losses.

Re: T&FN announces Athletes Of The Year

With a DQ everyone that finishes the race beats you, not just the guy who wins.

I am sympathetic when there is one of those minor flinches that do not either have the general effect of being helpful if the timing is right or affecting other runners (which is especially the case for a race in staggers, such as the 200). But in Bolt's case it was no mere twitch, he went completely out of the blocks and had the hallmarks of someone that was so concerned with the race and, particularly, the start that he was not in a position to have a high likelihood of performing well. That nervousness did not seem to be there in the 200.

        My thoughts exactly.

Plus he and Yohan didn't after the WC's in either event and only seems to have run 9 races all season (5 @ 100m, 4 @ 200m) against minimal competition.

This is not worthy of a Athlete of the Year prize or anywhere close.

          No it's a DQ.
So by your logic, if he was DQed in every single race he entered all year, it would be considered an undefeated season

...or a new strategy to maintain an unbeaten streak. Anytime you feel you're going to lose a race just do something to get yourself DQ'd (run inside your lane on the curve, push over a hurdle, tackle the guy in the lane next to you, etc.) and then you won't really have lost.

The IAAF got it right when it selected Bolt as athlete of the year. That is the award that really counts for athletes.

For many, what counts most is No. 1 in the T&FN Rankings, since that triggers things in their shoe contracts.

I hear you but I don't think Bolt is worried that he didn't get the Male athlete of the year award from T & F News magazine.

The IAAF award also came with US$100,000 prize.

Yea, it’s $100,000 more than what he would have gotten from Track and Field News Magazine if he had received their award
