  • Pamela Jelimo's return

I believe Pamela Jelimo's successful come-back (so far) deserves its own thread...

Top 7 from today's race in Lieven:

    1 MALIKA AKKAOUI MAR 1:59.01
    2 PAMELA JELIMO KEN 1:59.10
    3 YULIYA TUTAYEVA RUS 2:00.18
    4 TATYANA PALIENKO RUS 2:00.80
    5 ELISA CUSMA ITA 2:01.53
    6 EKATERINA MARTYNOVA RUS 2:01.79
    7 IRINA MARACHEVA RUS 2:02.26

That's Pamela's fastest time, indoors or outdoors, since the '08 season.

The updated '12 indoor world top-10 list:

    1:59.01 Malika Akkaoui Lievin 14/02/2012
    1:59.10 Pamela Jelimo Lievin 14/02/2012
    1:59.80 Elena Kofanova Moskva 12/02/2012
    2:00.18 Yuliya Tutayeva Lievin 14/02/2012
    2:00.45 Yuliya Rusanova Belgorod 29/01/2012
    2:00.80 Tatyana Palienko Lievin 14/02/2012
    2:01.53 Elisa Cusma Lievin 14/02/2012
    2:01.57 Ekaterina Poyistogova Moskva 12/02/2012
    2:01.79 Yekaterina Kupina Bordeaux 28/01/2012
    2:01.79 Ekatarina Martynova Lievin 14/02/2012

      Re: Pamela Jelimo's return

In the Dusseldorf thread, it was reported that Jelimo ran the 1500m there in 4:07.11, but was DQ'ed (cut in too early, iirc). Her IAAF bio shows no 1500m times for her so perhaps this was her debut? In any case, whilst acknowledging the DQ, this nevertheless seems a strong 1500m time for any 800m specialist at this point in the year, especially one making a comeback after a long time away from her best season.

I am very pleased to see these signs of return to form, and hope she has an excellent season (even though I realize this likely raises the w800 competition one more elite runner, and I still want to see some USA runner(s) in the London final).

If Jelimo is really back.... the finals look more like.... three Russians (Savinova included), Samenya, Jelimo, Jepkosgei.... Montono or Uceny should be able to sneak in...

And, in the meantime the girl who just beat her, Malika Akkaoui, is going to do what...quit? Because only 8 make the final and you've counted off 3 RUS, 3 Africans and 2 Americans:? I say: 'welcome back to elite", but Jelimo was historic before headed towards legendary. I'm encouraged by her improvement but she's got a ways to go. I will wait until Worlds or outdoors before proclaiming her back - which to me would mean WR theatening.

I said or. I doubt both will make it but I do think one of them can sneak in...
