  • US Men's 800-10,000 picture - Updated post-Occidental

Last night's races at Stanford muddled the picture (in a good way) in the US men's distance races (not including the struggling steeplechase). With the 1500/5000 double not very appealing (1500 prelims 2:30ish before the 5000 final), there will be some tough decisions to make, with guys choosing races that might seem surprising (e.g., Torrence in the 5000). How A-chasing the rest of the spring shakes out (particularly in the 1500) should help clarify things.

BTW, I'd have to do some research, but I'd be surprised if anyone other than Kenya and Ethiopia combined to have this many athletes with "A" marks.

The following athletes have "A" standards:
    1500m (3:35.50)
    Lagat
    Lomong
    Manzano
    Wheating
    Centrowitz

    5000m (13:20.00)
    Lagat
    Rupp
    Tegenkamp
    Bumbalough
    Lomong
    Torrence
    Derrick

    10,000m (27:45.00)
    Rupp
    Curtis
    Nelson
    Tegenkamp
    Derrick
    Vaughn

And a current 12:xx, 26:xx runner is not even on that list! I think Jager could make several but will likely run the Steeple (and 8:26 with a last lap that put 6 more seconds on the fastest American last year; malmo thinks this guy could/should be the next AR in the event)

Torrence will stick with the 1.500m. The 5.000m was a testing ground to gauge where he's at with his fitness. He'd run it to break up a string of 1.500m/mile races on tap. Doesn't want to have an empty tank come the OT.

You think this will be the case if he doesn't get the A in the 1500 in the next 7 weeks?

It's not a matter of what I believe. Torrence doesn't appear to have a Plan-B. The 1.500m races he's got coming up should forge him into that "A" territory, and he's banking on that.

I think Solinsky remains injured while Ritz is entered in the Pre 5000m.

I thought Torrence looked great; a natural for 5000. The way he accelerated instantly to go with Lopes is a good sign. Lomong obviously looked great; looks likely to be targeting the 5000 and the Trials race suddenly looks even better. Let's see what else Pre brings.....

estrada got the A with his 27:32 sunday in palo alto, tilastopaja says he got his USA citizenship on november 11th 2011, not sure about if he has to wait 2-3 years to run for the USA or not, some athletes can compete for their new country immediately, some have to wait a few years, i dont know why that is, anyway i hope estrada gets to run.

Are there any other 10,000 opportunities for Ritz or will he have to bank on doing it at the OT? :?

A key issue is the last time he represented the 'leaving' country -- maybe never for Estrada.

Estrada said himself that he is not eligible to run the US Trials and has decided to represent Mexico in London.

there is a 10000 in hengelo on may 27th with geb already announced, that would be 5 days before ritz is scheduled to run the 5000, tough, but a great simulation to try an olympic 5/10 double.
also there is a couple of 10000's in japan, japanrunningnews.com by brett larner has a may schedule up.
