  • Tommy Skipper making a comeback

If successful, this will be a lot of positive publicity for the sport.

I am indeed! His MO is to open at 19' and either no-height or soar majestically to victory. Not something I recommend to my kids, bit it sho am fun to watch!

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that he's going to be a little more conservative as he kicks off his comeback...

If memory serves, that was a one time event.

Otherwise, I am really pleased to hear this.

Don't try to obfuscate this with facts! I know there was a memorable case, but as my memory (I actually have an EXCELLENT memory, thank you very much; it's just very short) serves, there were other occasions.

At a low-key college meet he opened at 5.79 (19') and made it. The only time he jumped higher was a 5.80 at Regionals... I am fairly certain he did not open that high at Regionals.

Again, IIRC, he had been trying for 2-3 years to get over 19'/5.8x and would clear 18' x'' by a mile and then things would go wrong at 19'. Finally, at a small meet in Eugene where he wasn't expecting to compete at all, the coach told him to go ahead and jump and "oh, by the way" start at 19'. It seemed like a really good way for him to not overthink the problem.

Becca, any idea how long he has been training? Like everyone else, I assume you have access to all knowledge in the PV world....

I've heard discussion about it from people close to him going back well over a year ago. I don't know the details of what he's actually been doing, but this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment thing.

I'd be more interested in Lojo's comeback he was thinking about. I guess he decided that was a no go.

The discrepancy in ages (28 vs. 38) dictates my interest level.

Not to mention that Lojo was largely able to live up to expectations. Most of us thought/think Skipper was capable of far more.

How are Tommy's other nine events coming along?

                          He did what he did.

It just shows how bad the event has become that there's excitement over someone who never broke through to world class and no heighted in 90% of his meets his last two years is newsworthy.

How do you so often manage to find something negative in a feel-good story? The return of Skipper is intriguing, even if a long-shot.

Marlow, I am with you on this.

It was interesting watching Skipper flame out a couple years ago and then watching Hooker flame out this spring. You probably remember him clearing 5.10 in a meet earlier this year. Subsequently, Hooker appears to have gotten the support needed to conquer his demons, let's now see if Skipper is able to conquer his.

Yeah, the event has been pretty stagnant since Bubka left the scene so I am especially interested in seeing if he can put it back together for the trials.
