  • Powell injured and pulls out of Jamaica Invitational May 5th

Here we go again. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Why am I not surprised? . This is typical of what we have come to expect from Asafa almost every year.Injury every year. Afraid of competition. He was certain to get a beating by Blake over 200m at the Jamaica Invitational.

Hopefully, he is healthy for the Olympic Trials so he can make the team for the relays.

Asafa Powell doubtful about JN Jamaica Invitational

RJR news understands that Asafa Powel is doubtful for the men's 200 metres at Saturday’s 9th staging of the JN Jamaica International Invitational at the national stadium.

It’s understood that Powell is nursing a minor groin injury and a decision on his participation in the 200 metres will be made over the next few days.

Powell who was slated to face Yohan Blake among others in the men's 200 metres, could instead run the 100 metres on Saturday where he would be up against reigning Olympic champion and world record holder Usain Bolt. The former world 100 metres record holder doesn't want to take any chances in this the year of the olympics.

Can you explain how him being injured coincides with him being afraid of competition?

Could that be because Powell practically never runs the 200m?

Its rare for him to run the 100m completely and run competitively all the way through the tape.

I don't think he'd have to shy away from Blake in the deuce since not many would expect him to win.

If you know the history of Powell over the years, you would know exactly what I am talking about.

So your saying that Asafa purposely gets injured, or has been faking his injurys over the years because he is afraid?

While I agree with the premise, I would not have your tone. I feel sorry for the dude. Despite his impressive physique, It's like he's made of porcelain.

Its easy to get a 'niggle' especially as you get older. He's nearly 30 and doesn't want to risk a major tear that could take too long to heal and take too much out of training. No point risking a tiny tear becoming a big tear.

I completely disagree with notorious' tone and premise. He's wrong. The article clearly states that he may run the 100m if he can. This implies that it's not the competition that he's worried about...it's his groin.

Re: Powell injured and pulls out of Jamaica Invitational May

The man has run under 9.9 for 9 (NINE!) consecutive years. No sprinter's body in history has been subjected to that kind of stress! To suggest he is fragile is nonsense. Certainly, he has had a tendency over the years to ease up in races. He's also frequently avoided races when he has had a niggle. But could he have run so fast for so many years had he run harder more often and risked running whilst carrying niggles? Tyson Gay strikes me as someone with the opposite approach: he always runs eyeballs out and frequently has competed whilst carrying injuries. I suspect those traits have contributed to the amount of time he's spent on the sidelines.

This is just disappointing. The man has had a sensational career and I hope he can get it together for at least one more run at an individual Olympic Gold. But I have very little faith that he is physically or mentally capable of doing so. It feels like we're always talking about Asafa's injuries or we're always talking about his inability to run a complete race or "bring it" come Championship time.

Does anybody believe he can still be an Olympic 100m champion?

                      I agree exactly.

As much as I hate to admit it, I seriously doubt he could become Oly 100 champ.

Re: Powell injured and pulls out of Jamaica Invitational May

Asafa is a wonderful sprinter, but with nerves in a big championship he never run relaxed.
In adittion his last 15 or 20m are "weak" compared with great runners like Bolt,Blake or Gay.

So with both things, is possible that Powell get gold in 100m?I would tell that no, although is not totally impossible hehe

I don't understand the first post in this thread. The subject line says he's pulled out. The article that the thread seems to be based on says he's doubtful and a decision will be made in the next few days.

                          Is there something more?

Yup. The man has a fragile psyche. Sure it is possible to get injured, but Powell seems to be making a habit of falling lame, immediately after he states on the record that he is in good shape and injury free, and usually if there is going to be a decent match up for him. If Blake wasn't in the 200, Powell probably wouldn't have become injured. Some people might think that is harsh, but it is the pattern that Powell has shown us. There is always some excuse on why he might duck out of certain races, or why he doesn't run all the way through the tape, or why he got caught from behind etc. etc. I used to be a big fan of his. He is too frustrating to be a fan of though now.

For that to happen Powell would have to run like the tall sprinter he is, and somehow develop better speed maintenance.
