  • 25K road WR for Kimetto

An e-mail I got reminds me that nobody ever mentioned here last weekend's run:

<<Well, a WR is a WR: hats off to Dennis Kimetto.

He shattered the previous official mark by 32 seconds.

    http://www.iaaf.org/Mini/WHM12/News/New ... x?id=64808

What this article doesn't mention is that Kimetto's time was not only faster than the official WR of Sammy Kosgei (1:11:50) but also faster than the unofficial world record of Haile Gebrselassie (1:11:37) set in 2006.

The article also doesn't mention Kimetto's pace per mile: 4:35.4

    4:35.4/mile for 15.5 miles...>>

    4:35.4/mile for 15.5 miles...

Which translates to about 2:00:20 for a marathon. We're getting there!

Interesting to think with -- Kimetto 1:11:18 for 25km ...

not sure what his precise 5km splits were, but from the IAAF news release, leaders did this:
14:00; 28:21 (14:21); 42:46 (14:25); nothing listed for 20km, but, if my arithmetic is right, it was 28:32 for the last 10km, so 14:16 average.

      compared with ...
      Adhane Yemane 1:13:00 @25km in Rotterdam 2012 (2:04:48)
      Geb 1:13:04 @25km in Dubai 2008 (2:04:53)
      G. Mutai 1:13:16 @25km in Boston 2011 (2:03:02)
      P. Makau 1:13:18 @25km in Berlin 2011 (2:03:38)

      Yemane went from 25-30 km in 14:40; 30-35km in 14:53; 35-40km in 15:22.
      G. Mutai 25-30km in 15:08; 30-35 in 14:11; 35-40 in 14:13 (good lord -- is that right? That's what Nakamura's stats yield, unless I can't add...of course, in addition to the other excellent conditions, he had M. Mosop with him, and thus was having to run like that just to win)
      P. Makau 25-30km in 14:20; 30-35 in 14:38; 35-40 in 14:59.
      Geb 25-30km in 14:57; 30-35 in 15:11; 35-40 in 15:07.

(These stats from Ken Nakamura's great marathon statistics analysis for London 2012; according to my scan of the list, Yemane is fastest on record to 25km -- at least among people who actually finished with a great time and thus are on Nakamura's lists).

So, hypothetically, Kimetto is ahead of Yemane by 1:42 @ 25km, and is ~2 minutes ahead of G. Mutai and Makau. Interesting to think what might have been the consequences for any of these athletes had they gone through 25km @ Kimetto's pace, or -- in general -- what it would take to keep going for another 10.7 miles off such a pace through 25km.

If one merged Kimetto's splits with G. Mutai's later splits, one would have to be able to run those 5 @ 5km in low-14 as did Kimetto, then upgrade Mutai's 25-30km split by a minute, then finish as Mutai did.

(thanks, conor, for giving me something to think about this morning instead of work!)

The track WR was 1:12:25; slower but the 30K 1:26:47.4 was 'better' [2:02 pace?]

Mosop's WR is about 2:02 pace. A marginal improvement.

you nailed it. they can go 30K NOW at this pace already with decent pacing.
we are looking at a 202 next year and once someone does 201, then it is no longer a debate if man can run 2:00.

The hidden problem is energy systems and the faster you go, the quicker you use your premium fuel.

Some people, including Canova, are now talking about using lactate as a source of fuel in longer races. If this mechanism is understood more thoroughly, there could be a breakthrough in performances in races beyond 30km.
