  • let's hope there are some scratches!

    Start lists of the Pac-12 men's 5000 show 47 (!) entries, and the women's 54 (!!).

In a timetable that doesn't have room for sections.

Let's make that, hope there are MANY scratches.

Is there no standard - or was it just that 'pathetic'?

I've always been curious why high schools, the participation end of the sport, cap entries at typically 2 or 3 per team per event, but D-1 colleges don't.

These aren't atypical numbers for the major conferences, given the position of the 5000s at the end of the meet. Basically it's "enter everyone who ran the 1500, steeple, and 10,000 (and who has the Q marks, if necessary)". Safe to say there will be plenty of scratches. I was certainly entered in several indoor 3000s and outdoor 5000s that I was almost certain I would not be running.

Yeah...I thought the same things when I was looking at the start lists of the Oxy distance races. I guess at Oxy they can just run several races like Stanford does...

And to think, 33 cars at the 2.5 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway looks like a lot!

Re: let's hope there are some scratches!

Last year here in Tucson, the men's PAC-10 5000m start list initially had 43 entries, and 10 of them eventually scratched leaving 33 to run. The women's start list initially had 48 entries, with 12 eventually scratching, leaving 36 to run. I guess the numbers this year are pretty in sync with last year's, considering it's now the PAC-12. (although Utah doesn't have a men's team, so the men's teams only increased to 11 rather than 12)...

Often, the field shrinks as the race goes on as possible outcomes are eliminated and some runners emerge strong.

I'm sure a lot of the athletes will be covered in scratches after the races.
