  • Adidas Grand Prix 2012 - New York

Who is going to Adidas in NYC this year? What's the buzz on potential crowd? Any big announcements coming? Where's the local press or promotion? Is Tyson Gay running?

There does not seem to be as much buzz this year and most people in NYC still have no freakin clue what the event even is.

When are they going to crack into the mainstream consciousness in NYC and make this meet a sellout every year? There are 20 million plus people in the region? What gives?

    Comments, suggestions, news, buzz, please.

World Champion and Mr. 19.26 Yohan Blake will be running the 200m.

Jeter vs Fraser in the 100m.

Big absences include Tyson and Veronica who are both Adidas athletes.

Adidas this Saturday and worried this year is going to be a letdown. The weather forecast looks fantastic, so that's good news. The worrying this is that there are rumors floating around that ticket sales have not been great - and there just does not seem to be a strong marketing push. Just don't "see it". Most New York sports fans that would be inclined to go to Adidas as an "event" of sorts (i.e. similar to the U.S. Open in Tennis; lots of people go because they think it's a cool experience, not necessarily because they are huge tennis fans).

      any word on the street?

I'm right around the corner from ICAHN stadium in Astoria and I don't know if I'm gonna go. $50ish for a decent seat and they don't have the entry lists up yet

Want I did last year was just buy the $35 tickets and move around in the stadium. I have the same tickets for this weekend, but I suspect that the terrible weather last year made it easier to do. If the weather is nice this weekend, the stadium will be close to packed.

USATF-NY hosted a Twilight series of meets at Ichan and did some promotion and were selling discounted tickets there, but there were hardly any people there besides the competing athletes who already know about the meet. But like I said if the weather is nice, the stadium and the backstretch should be packed. Especially with Blake there, Randalls Island will become Jamaica.

ATK - I hope you're right about the crowds. let's hope they are big this year.

gotta say though, the marketing for this event seems lacking.

the marketing seems to be limited to social media. have seen nothing in subway, at health clubs, schools, etc.

also, they market this meet in such a niche fashion, seemingly only catering to the Jamaican/West Indies NYC communities, that are conceding cult status. they have to break into a broader mainstream audience if they are going to keep this going.

it's a bad joke if they can't sellout (10-11,000 capacity?) in a region of 20 million people.

the good weather should hope. but some big announcements and press conferences this week will help even more.

Just going based off how 2009 and 2010 was, when there was amazing weather and competition. Blake should bring out many people.

I finally bought my ticket today (yes I procrastinate). The first level on the homestretch (the sections in the 100s) was pretty much sold out. Still seats in the sections in the 200s and on the backstretch.

Last year the weather was pretty crappy (60ish, drizzling. and a healthy wind). Three seats next to me in the $75 section (101) stayed empty the entire meet. Don't think there will be much of that this year.

really hope you folks are right. the weather is supposed to be 77, clear, with light winds (probably tail wind). that should make for great performances in straightaway sprints and jumps.

let's hope they are doing some last minute blitz marketing to get folks out and that some big announcements are coming this week. The Allyson Felix announcement for the women's 100 is a good one. Also hear that Nickel Ashmeade is running the 200. I'm assuming that Yohan Blake will be running the 200, yeah?

Also noticed today that they cleaned up and reordered the meet schedule on the Diamond League site. Looks more promising for a good meet now.

As a hard core fan of the sport I would love to see the NYC meet reach a point where a widely recognized event that sells 15,000 every year (seems they could add even more temporary capacity on both ends of the track, which would be good for the jumps).

It easy to fill the Adidas Grand Prix. Just invite Usain Bolt and pay him his $250,000 fee and your guaranteed to have a full stadium.

Not probably. Its absolute. In 2010, 54,000+ people showed up on the final day of the Penn Relays to watch Bolt run.

Ichann stadium is alot smaller. It was sold out in 2008 when Bolt 1st broke the world record.

If you pay him what he gets in Europe, there will be no need to cancel unless he is injured. Bolt is someone you can count on appearing if he is not injured.

But he does get injured from time to time, as was the case with this meet two years ago.
